Will Teague be back?

Forgive the absence of a link--I'm too lazy to go find it--but, last time I saw any extensive quotes by Schlenk, I had two takeaways. First, he really wants to see all of his "young core" play with Capela, including explicitly Huerter, which somewhat persuaded me that it's not at all likely that Huerter is going anywhere this off-season. And second, was that Schlenk seemed to still be infatuated with having a chance to see more of Teague. His enthusiasm left little doubt that he wants to be in the mix for Teague's return.

What say you, Jeffrey Demarco?

Looks like unless Schlenk gets another star Teague is going to another team. Teague stated he doesn’t want to be on a rebuilding team.

If the price is right - - - Teague gives the impression that he will want a much bigger $$$ payroll hit than Hawks should be willing to meet. He believes that he is as good as he ever was. That means, a high priced veteran. Personally, I don't believe.

Some of the Hawks on our present roster will not return. We must add our draft pick, provided we keep him. Also, Travis wants to add one or two veterans, preferably as free agents. Jeff's payroll hit this past season was $19 million. Half that is twice as much as I would offer.

Interested to know, then, when Schlenk calls to get your recommendation :) , how much are you going to tell him to go-in to bring Teague back?... remembering, too, that if you do bring him back, you're likely cutting Goowin and his $1.7m loose.

Travis, We can't afford to pay JT what he believes he's worth. Goodwin as shown flashes. If we can Draft Tyrese then we can just forget JT and spend that extra payroll on something else!

Yeah I always figured Teague wasn’t gonna stay and I always thought our absolute worst case scenario is BG gets those minutes and in my opinion, we could do a lot worse. That man is a dog.

Pure guess. I say you can get Teague for $5m-ish.

I believe he's keeping his options open based on the interview, but/and I also see an open door to the Hawks b/c the team is loudly and proudly aiming for playoffs in 2021--no more "building for the draft"--and also b/c he's said flatly he's not demanding to get a starter role wherever he goes.

Based on my recall of his pro-Teague comments, I believe Schlenk is persuaded to pursue bringing Jeffrey back due not only to the "older brother" aspect for Trae, but to have a veteran to turn to in the playoffs as needed. Teague's only redeeming qualities are on offense, and chasing down breakaways for blocks. He's arguably worse, imo, than Trae on the defensive end. Schlenk seemed to want to chalk that up to his being unfamiliar with Pierce's system, iirc, but I'm skeptical that he was just covering for him.

I won't be upset either way, unless Schlenk pays Teague too much or signs him for more than 1 year. Assuming Haliburton were to be drafted, I'm inclined to think Teague essentially gets 2nd string minutes for maybe 25-40 games, but after that, nothing's guaranteed.

As for Goodwin, the week before the ASG, his minutes became severely limited in comparison to what he'd been getting in the 5-6 weeks before. That's not an encouraging sign, of course.

Hawks don't need to overpay so I hope Teague moves on. He seems to desire winning but I believe he's more focused on winning. Time will tell.

Tht is correct. He wants to be on a team focused on winning and not tanking for the draft. Here is quotes from a article out on Hoops Rumors.

“I don’t want to go to a team where we’re trying to build for the draft,” Teague said. “I don’t want to do that.”

Speaking to Scotto, Teague suggested he won’t be opposed to joining a younger roster as long as the team is prioritizing winning over rebuilding.

“I get along with all the young guys. Me and the young guys have strong relationships on most of the teams I’ve played on,” Teague said. “I like to take them under my wing and try to be a leader to them.”

There is nothing in here that says he wants to compete for a championship and thus take a Tax MLE. He could stay since Hawks goal is making the playoffs. If the Hawks want him back, they can make it hard for him to walk away money wise. His comments though may have done him no favors getting good money from the Hawks. Negative spins or connotations are not something a young team needs from their vets.

This article brings a thing that may explain why Teague signed with BOS...

...“I knew Brad since high school, he actually changed my whole life, basically,” said Teague. “Because I had a path that I wasn't really focused on school as much. I played basketball, obviously, but school wasn't my favorite thing to do. So he pulled me into a room at Butler as a sophomore in front of my dad and he basically showed him my grades. I had been hiding report cards for some years. And basically just told me, ‘If you want the opportunity to play college basketball, you have to bring your grades up.’ And my dad not seeing my grades for a couple of years, he was pretty mad about that.

"I had to get my act together, man. Basically got my focus right. And every time we play the Celtics in the past I would tell Brad, 'Hey, thank you for saving my life,' and he would look at me like shut up, whatever man. No, that was a big moment for me. I appreciate it.”... Link

So, my takeaway is we're kinda silly to be keeping grades out of the hands of parents at a university level, but that's the law. Jeff should thank him... and then have the lawsuit papers served. :D
