Kirschner: Lack of a legit veteran defense-first big could become a problem

I am a bit curious to see how the Capela and Collins duo will work defensively in the playoffs because neither of them is elite at guarding out on the perimeter. It’s not a concern right now, but it is something to note when the next step in this team’s process is advancing in the playoffs because I foresee it becoming an issue in the future...
Fernando got worked in the paint by Nikola Vucevic. It was not a pretty showing for Fernando, as he still looks unsure of where he’s supposed to be and what he’s supposed to do defensively. With Onyeka Okongwu out as he heals from inflammation in his foot, Fernando received the backup center minutes behind Capela.
My thoughts on the center position are as follows: If Capela gets hurt and misses significant time this season, there’s a chance that spot could be a clear negative. I’m hesitant to have a strong belief in a rookie center coming in and being positive defensively, even though Okongwu is going to be a good defender eventually, and Fernando has a long way to go in becoming a reliable player. It’s possible we’ll still see a lot of small-ball five minutes from Collins this season because the depth behind Capela is questionable.
Think I agree with this, and I've not always been one to agree with Kirschner.
The kind of guy I wish we could add, but we just don't have a roster spot for is John Henson.

Pretty easy take. Any team loses their starting Center might struggle at Center. Not being the best outside defenders comes with being Bigs.... Okongwu means we won't have to see much Bruno. Not a fan of Kirschner's and this article just adds to that

Many if not most teams have a veteran back-up, as opposed to a rookie and a sophomore whose first season was as complicated (both by covid and his mom's illness and eventual death) as Bruno's was. (Me, I'm regarding this season to essentially be the second half of Bruno's rookie season.)
This is a fuller explanation:

Looks like I have some company... or, at least "had"...

I agree. This is just part of Bruno's rookie year. He had just got his world back in order with his mother's passing when Covid19 ended his season, (And all the Hawks) He has a lot to learn. Then, there's our rookie, O.O., who is still recovering. Nathan Knight, our other center is on a two way contract.
Right now, Capela is the key to our having a very good team this upcoming season. He must stay healthy. Our rookie will heal. Bruno will certainly grow. Time is on our side. The further we go into the season, the better prepared our back up centers become.

If it becomes a prob, easy to bring in a vet min to help. Has Dedmon been signed? Think he was released after trade

Dedmon thrice? Possibly but I think we are good in the big man department.

Me too. Just responding to the worriers.

Can't repossess Dedmon apparently for a whole 12 months--ie, rules don't let a team trade a player to another team, waive him, and the original team pick him back up as a FA. Best you could do is see another team sign him, and trade him back to us.

Goodwin is a waste of a roster slot at that point that it appears at least one of Rondo or Dunn is back to 100%.

New option whose availability may time up well with either Dunn or Rondo getting back to full health (?).
Seems like Vonleh should be as old as Henson... hehe... but he's 5 years younger. Henson is a better defender, but Vonleh is no slouch. Vonleh is not the free throw clanker that Henson is. I'd be fine either way.

I'd rather have Skal over Dedmon or Bruno. I guess teams have given up on him ever staying healthy however.

Skal can still be had, as far as I understand anyhow, but it seems telling that he appears to be headed to the Knicks' G-league team instead of College Park. Not sure why Schlenk seems to have lost interest after bothering to trade for him, and even having him part of the bubble training camp.

Can we return him? Houston sold us a lemon.

I feel the same way about our trading Dedmon for Snell...Dewayne would be hugely useful right now with Capela and OO out injured.
