Let’s immediately get one thing straight: The Hawks did not beat the Celtics on the road and hold a fourth-quarter lead, which has been a struggle all season, because Lloyd Pierce wasn’t on the sideline Wednesday as he’s back in Atlanta for the birth of his second child.

The Hawks beat the Celtics in Boston for the first time since April 2018 simply because their star player played like a star. Trae Young went nuclear, scoring 40 points on 14-of-20 shooting, and he racked up eight assists, too. When Young plays the way he did Wednesday, the Hawks can compete with anyone; it’s just a matter of getting these kinds of performances from him more regularly. When Young scores 26 points (his season average) or more, the Hawks are 10-4. When he scores 25 points or fewer, they’re 2-10.

One of the differences with Young in Wednesday’s 122-114 win as opposed to what we saw Monday against the Knicks was he was certainly more active in controlling this team down the stretch.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about with Trae,” acting head coach Nate McMillan said. “He has to show that growth of managing a game whether we’re up or down in the fourth quarter. We talked about his turnovers. I thought he did a good job tonight of, when we didn’t have anything early, getting us organized down the stretch, taking what the defense gave him — I didn’t realize he had 40 points. He just did a good job of managing the offense and the defense. I thought he established a tempo that we wanted and did a good job of executing down the stretch.”
Young was active in the passing lanes, composed and not dying on screens, and fully engaged with whoever was in front of him; he even had a deflection when Jaylen Brown tried posting him up. McMillan said Pierce has challenged Young this season to play harder on both ends of the floor, and though he’s still not the best of defenders, he has been more attentive.

“He’s been challenged by Coach (Pierce) to get out there and defend, work at it and play both ends of the floor,” McMillan said. “He did a solid job again tonight just being in the right position and making guys score over the top.”

Everything was working for Young on Wednesday, including his floater, which is his most lethal shot. Entering Wednesday’s game, Young had made only 37 percent of his floater attempts, ranking him in the 32nd percentile, per Synergy. He was 5-of-6 on floater attempts against the Celtics, and when those are falling, he’s hard to stop.

Is it just a coincidence that Trae finally went off last night though? I think not

Me neither.

We'll see if it carries over to Friday when McMillan will still be coaching.

Boston played a different defense on Trae - they rarely doubled him off the PnR to get the ball out of his hand, there also wasn't a lot of full court ball denial. Trae's success was his floater falling, Boston didn't have anyone in the paint to disrupt him. We'll see how they play him on Friday. Kemba should also be available.

It will be interesting.
On social media some Hawk fans are saying Nate just used Lloyd's game plan. Regardless, Trae came to play and so did the rest of his teammates.

What I saw was a team play the Celtics wire to wire and finished in the 4th. Those are non Pierce qualities. Even Reddish looked more under control instead of hunting the 3.

The Cs are void of pg and c depth so that helped, but I want to see Nate coach this team more.

Saw the beginning live and the rest of the game in replay, and actually, what I liked compare to the previous games was not on offense but on defense.
For the first time since Hunter is out, I saw energy from enough players at the same time, and better placement. Now, just not sure if this game would have been a win if Smart was there... on the other end, we still don't have Hunter, Bogi, Rondo...

Until now, when they play with Capela, Collins, Hunter and Young, the team is very good. The other players have to show more, especially without Hunter, and it was the case in this game, but it has to continue.
We can also see it in the Plus/Minus with Reddish leading at +14 and then Huerter (and Capela) at +9. The worst was Hill with only -2, a totally different thing than a lot of times where we had one or two players not in the game at all and -10 to -15 in a few minutes

Brad needs to just have a guy knock Trae on his ass once or twice hard and it should work. Boston misses Marcus Smart!

Jaylen Brown is questionable so once his status is clear a Vegas line should come out.

I'm sure we are all very interested in seeing what adjustments Boston is going to make tonight. Are they going to blitz Trae like some teams have done this year with success? Or are they going to just lie back and take it like they did the other night? I vote for the latter :)

JB looks like a go for tonight. I expect he'll take a big role in guarding Trae tonight. I expect Huerter to put some solid production.
