Alperen Sengun Declares for 2021 NBA Draft

Turkish basketball player Alperen Sengun has officially declared for the 2021 NBA draft.

ESPN's Jonathan Givony called Sengun a "dominant interior scorer with preternatural instincts crashing the glass, creating for teammates, getting in passing lanes, and protecting the rim."

Per Givony, NBA scouts have compared Sengun's game to Kevin Love and Domantas Sabonis.

Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman has Sengun ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect in this year's class. He projected the 6'10" center would be selected No. 24 overall by the Houston Rockets in his most recent mock draft.

Sengun is playing for Besiktas in the Turkish Basketball Super League. He is averaging 19.2 points on 64.6 percent shooting, 9.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in 29 appearances this season.

Prior to joining Besiktas, Sengun spent time with Bandirma Kirmizi and Teksut Bandirma. He also won a silver medal with Turkey at the FIBA Europe U-18 Championship in 2019.

Strengths and Weaknesses for Every Projected Lottery Pick

Alperen Sengun (Besiktas, C, 2002)

Image

Strengths

Interior Scoring

As MVP of the Turkish BSL, Alperen Sengun averaged 18.6 points on 62.6 percent shooting by consistently working pro big men in the paint at 18. He flashed a high skill level from the foul line to baseline, finding ways to create open looks in tight windows with spin moves, up-and-unders and other types of footwork. He also has excellent hands and a nose for the rim, so every shot he attempted was controlled and high-percentage. Sengun also demonstrated terrific timing rolling to the hoop off ball screens. And though not known for his explosiveness, he did show some pop on dunk attempts with both hands when loading up with momentum.

Budding Forward Skills
Sengun looked more like an NBA center than a European one over the last two months of the season. We saw more transition ball-handling, face-up moves and passing. He created highlights by taking defensive rebounds coast to coast, losing defenders with in-and-out dribbles from the perimeter and dishing on the move. Shooting isn't a strength, but he did hit 81.2 percent of his 6.1 free-throw attempts per game, while his seven made three-pointers looked comfortable and promising for the long term.

Defensive Instincts

Though he doesn't possess unbelievable size or length for a center, he was effective in certain spots, showing shot-blocking timing and awareness in pick-and-roll situations. He made good reads in terms of when to step up or drop to the roller. And he moved well enough to stick with ball-handlers turning the corner.

Weaknesses

Lack of Quickness/Explosion
While Sengun relied on craft, skill and patience, he wasn't able to beat defenders with quick-twitch moves that would serve him well in the NBA. It's worth questioning how easily he'll be able to separate against more athletic, longer frontcourts.

Limited Versatility
The team that drafts Sengun will be hoping he continues to build on the budding flashes of transition and perimeter play. He lacks versatility in the half court, used mostly as a post player or roll man. And defensively, he's limited to guarding inside bigs. Opponents will likely target him in ball screens to bring him away from the basket, where ball-handlers could attack him.

2021 NBA Draft: Ranking the best offensive skills

Interior scoring for bigs

1. Alperen Sengun, Besiktas

Sengun is as elite as it gets as an interior finisher, both statistically and in terms of the tape. At the basket this past season, Sengun made 74.7 percent of his shots in half-court settings, a ridiculous number. Among the 65 players to take at least 50 shots at the rim in the Turkish League, that was the second-best mark. He also scored more points at the rim than any other player in half-court settings in the Turkish League. Particularly terrific in the pick-and-roll, which is the most translatable setting that he’ll fill. In large part, he finishes well around the basket because of his touch, his ability to extend and his ability to clear out an angle with his strength from his lower half. He has great hands and coordination that allow him to catch and make a move all in one motion. Sengun can catch the ball below his waist, at waist level, and above his head with ease. His footwork is exceptional. He can spin and finish with balance while keeping his eye on the rim. Also, while he won’t be asked to use it as much, his game in the post is terrific. His favorite move is the quick backspin, and he has great set of counters to whatever the defender presents him. He’ll use step-throughs, up-and-unders, then hit a reverse spin. Generally, Sengun is just an absolute offensive technician inside, and there’s every reason to believe in him scoring on offense.

Kid has been productive in SL. I'll be keeping a close eye on him this season.

GM Stone said he ok’d the Alpi nickname.

Nice game he’s got some Pau in his game but better passing skills which is saying a lot. Good stroke from deep and a great overall feel for the game. Rockets made a good pick. Christopher looked good tonight and I think Jalen Green will be the best player in this draft.

Rockets went 3/3.

And add them Garuba. He is a very good defensive minded player who showed good signs on Euroleague playoffs against Efes the champions.

This dude has looked great!! Star potential. We were rumored to be interested in him during that draft runup.

Crazy we missed him by like 2 picks...

We missed out on getting this dude in the 2021 draft. He would have been a game changer for this roster.

I think I know what you guys will say (now)...but imagine if we had gotten Sengun in 2021 instead of Jalen.

It changes the entire direction of the franchise the last few years. No DeJounte, all of our draft picks.

Sengun and Okongwu would be a perfect pairing in the frontcourt.

Trae + Sengun could be a better version of Jamal Murray and Jokic.
