Grading Top 2021 NBA Draft Prospects in Each Key Category

Scoring: A-
Tre Mann's breakout was evident early, but it escalated in March. He averaged 21.2 points on 55.2 percent shooting over Florida's last five games.

For the season, he was one of the nation's top ball-screen scorers (88th percentile). Defenses had difficulty containing his shiftiness. He excelled creating and making shots off the dribble from every level. His floater also developed into a valuable weapon (20-of-43).
Mann did have trouble scoring off the ball, though he didn't spend much time spotting up or cutting.

Shooting: A-
Pull-up shooting elevated Mann's scoring attack. He shot 40.3 percent on dribble jumpers, many coming from behind the arc, where he made 1.9 threes per game at a 40.2 percent clip.

Playmaking: B
Mann only averaged 3.5 assists to 2.8 turnovers, a ratio that raises questions about whether he's suited for a lead-guard role. He showcased playmaking skill, grading in the 87th percentile as a pick-and-roll passer. Mann set teammates up off his creativity, but he also looked for his own shot more.

Defense: B+
Mann made defensive reads and effort plays he didn't make as a freshman. He raised his steal percentage (2.4 percent) and lowered his foul rate (from 4.1 to 2.9 per 40 minutes).

Impact: A-
Mann emerged as a leader and floor general for Florida after Keyontae Johnson's departure from the lineup early in the season. The team leaned heavily on Mann's ability to create and shot-make, and he delivered, particularly during the postseason tournaments.

The Hawks really need some help running the offense just to try to save Trae Young from having to do so much out there. So grabbing a backup lead guard here would be a great addition to this successful, young core. Mann gives you good size at the position, too. He’s 6-foot-4 and while his wingspan is lacking, his offensive abilities are not. Mann can flat-out shoot the ball and it doesn’t only come from catch-and-shoot opportunities. He’s great at shooting off the dribble, especially from distance.

Mann’s issue is on the defensive end. Having him and Young as your two lead guards means the point of attack is going to be brutal. But they give you so much offensively it might not matter, especially with the guys they have behind them on the court. Mann might have some of the same problems Young had with on-court leadership prior to figuring out the balance between scoring and facilitating. Mann isn’t nearly the playmaker Young is, but he also doesn’t need to be as a backup point guard. Just keep things moving.

Tre Mann began to improve his standing among scouts earlier in the year. But March wound up being his most convincing month of the season as he averaged 21.2 points on 55.2 percent shooting through five games.

He's been persuasive with his ball-handling creativity and shooting off the dribble, including pull-ups (40.2 percent) and floaters (46.5 percent). He easily gets to his spots using change of speed and direction, and he has the size (6'5"), shiftiness and touch for on-ball scoring at the next level.

While shot-making represents Mann's signature strength and eventual money-maker, he's made some acrobatic finishes, timely transition passes and good reads passing off penetration over the past few weeks. And he's consistently been a plus rebounder at the position, averaging 5.6 boards for the season.

There is some hesitation about calling Mann a lead point guard at the next level as he's more decisive and advanced as a scorer than playmaker. But teammates shot 57.0 percent off his ball-screen passes (87th percentile pick-and-roll ball-handling passer), and he's developed into a complete enough player to overlook questions about his label or projected role.

When it comes to preparing for the transition to the NBA, former Florida Gators guard Tre Mann likes to study some of the best players in the game and learn their moves on the court.

Based on his level of play, it is easy to see those moves come to life.

Mann was named to the All-SEC first team after averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 24 games with the Gators. He turned in a strong run in the SEC and NCAA tournaments, and has helped improve his draft stock considerably as of late.

The 6-foot-4 product on Wednesday was one of six prospects to work out with the Indiana Pacers. Afterward, Mann named some of the players he watches in an interview with Wheat Hotchkiss of Pacers.com.

I watch Trae Young, Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and CJ McCollum, guys like that who are crafty and can create their own shots; the same type of game I have. I feel like I’m a wiggle player, can get to my spots and beat a guy off the dribble whether I’m shooting from deep or getting to the rim. I feel like I do pretty well.

Mann believes he is the best player in the draft when it comes to shooting, either off the catch or dribble. He shot 40.2% from 3-point range last season and certainly has the credentials to become a knockdown shooter at the next level.

With more workouts on the horizon, Mann can continue to improve his draft stock. He is currently projected to be selected in the 20s as his skill set projects to translate well in the NBA.

He certainly watches the right players to be able to eventually reach that level…

Pull-up shooting

1. Tre Mann, Florida

Mann is just an absolute monster out of pull-ups. He hit 40.2 percent of his pull-up attempts this season, many of which came from beyond the 3-point line, which is saying a lot. He just has a ridiculous amount of moves in his bag to get to the pull-up on balance. He decelerates exceptionally well, which allows him to stop on a dime and pull up. The hesitation move is where he makes his money. He’s a big fan of the hang dribble pull-up, but his overall game is much more diversified than that. He plays off the hang dribble with a pretty vicious series of crossovers. He can go right-to-left crossover into a side-step pull-up. He can hit a quick pound dribble with his left into a step-back, which creates real separation from defenders. But his favored move is the left-to-right between-the-legs dribble into a sidestep left pull-up. Once he gets there, has very simple mechanics. He doesn’t elevate much, and there is no ball dip or wasted motion. He just has a very quick transfer from pull-up to fire or catch to fire with nearly unlimited range.
