Jalen Johnson is flashing his long-term potential for the Hawks

Image

Jalen Johnson is soaking up all of the knowledge he can get on and off the floor. Since Johnson has been recalled from Atlanta’s G League team, he’s been like a sponge. He’s said the best way he learns is by listening and observing. By watching from the bench most games, he’s understood how his teammates play, the spots they like to get to on the floor and where he can fit in around them. Because Danilo Gallinari was ruled out with an elbow injury and De’Andre Hunter was a late scratch...Johnson was in the rotation Monday night.

He finished a team-best plus-16 and had 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the Hawks’ 132-123 win over the Pacers. More importantly, it looked like he belonged, which isn’t always the easiest for a rookie who hasn’t played much.

The Hawks’ plan from the moment they drafted Johnson was never to force him into the lineup from Day 1, because they knew he was raw coming out of Duke after playing only 13 games. Instead of getting his developmental minutes in the NBA, the Hawks allowed him to grow in the G League where he was able to play with the ball in his hands more and guard fours and fives, and it allowed him the freedom to make mistakes.

As Johnson continues developing, he also could become someone who can grab rebounds and push the ball in transition, which is what he’s shown with College Park. The more ballhandlers on the floor with Trae Young, the more it could open up the offense for everyone.

Offensively, it’s clear what he might be able to do one day when he’s a regular in the rotation, but defensively, he’s still a question. That’s to be expected because young players normally take some time to get acclimated on that end. Bogdanovic thinks Johnson might be able to guard every position on the floor when he grows more comfortable on that end. McMillan is being cautious with Johnson on defense, having him guard fours only with occasional switching. His defense was much better against Indiana than it was [in previous games], but he’s still below average on that end right now...

Johnson’s lack of playing time has been a constant source of frustration for Hawks fans this season, but sources close to the team were adamant for months that he needed as many developmental minutes as possible. That wasn’t going to be given to him at the NBA level right away, especially for a team that came into the season with lofty playoff expectations.

“I don’t know where he fits, but I know he’s a really good player in this league, and I think he’s going to be good for us as long as he’s here,” Young said.

Glad to see the young fella finally make it into the rotation. His defensive awareness is worrisome. Once he starts to get that 3 to drop more steadily, he'll be hard to keep out of the lineup.

I'm a big believer, but I'm alos a big homer for home grown Hawks. I think that he has prototype F talent with big offensive upside. I think that his athleticism will allow him to develop his D

I think that he should be the back up F starting next season.

Kevin Chouinard: Putting the exit interviews up on @ATLand29 momentarily. An excerpt from Nate McMillan on Jalen Johnson: “We’re really looking forward to him playing Summer League, getting better, and earning a right to be in that rotation next season.”

Landry Field on Jalen Johnson (radio interview)
https://omny.fm/shows/middays-with-rick-john/hawks-gm-landry-fields-jalen-johnson-will-have-a-b

Andy & Randy asked Fields about which players will pop this year and may be surprise to fans outside of Dejounte Murray who is already an All-Star caliber player.

“Well this year Jalen Johnson is going to see a bigger role based off of last year.
With his size and his talent and playmaking ability I think he is a guy that fans should definitely be aware of and watching him as he kind of moves into our backup 4 at this point,” Fields replied when asked who fans should be looking out for outside of Dejounte Murray (and Trae Young obviously).

Rating NBA’s sophomore class

Group IV: Trending … not up

Jalen Johnson, Hawks: After spending most of his rookie year in witness protection, Johnson has been thrust into service as a backup four in his sophomore season. At times, his athleticism has made an impact, especially at the defensive end, where he’s often found himself matched up against elite forwards. He can also get out in transition and make plays and has averaged nearly two assists for every turnover.

Unfortunately, he’s been unable to stretch the floor, and on a team that already struggles in this department and plays a traditional center all 48 minutes, that’s become a problem. Johnson is shooting just 21.4 percent from 3 this season and hasn’t been much better on midrange 2s; even while shooting 72.1 percent at the rim, his true shooting mark is just 51.5 percent.

Johnson has real ability and, as with most players on this list, time is still on his side at age 21. But he can’t just be a five in a four’s body.

Can't properly develop timing and decisiveness without consistent playing time.
The lack of development from Nate is annoying.

....this is just another annoyance with Nate. Read the room...a guy is on a hot streak and his little card says it's time to sub out, he'll make the sub. Smh.

Some level of vindication after a tough foul call. (How do they not review these automatically?)

In the last three games his minutes have been reduced compare to the previous four games. He seemed to be productive during those four games too.

Nate. He can only play 9. The 1st game where we had all our players, he played an 8 man rotation until foul trouble forced his hand. Gave him.his token 5 minutes.

Jalen looked like a young, inexperienced player in the first half against Miami during the Play-In. But Quin let him play through the jitters and the turnovers and the bad foul calls.

And it absolutely paid off.

Good on coach for the patience and impressive play down the stretch from JJ.

The Quin Effect. He allows him to play through his mistakes and coaches him up through those mistakes.
