Apparently Koonan was on Dukes and Bell (92.9) and called it false and trash journalism.

Geesh. Our franchise has become a laughingstock. Once cooler heads resolve, Koonin is gonna regret this public response.

Re: Shams: McMillan strongly considered resigning.
If Landry is making a change, it either comes directly before or after the road trip. Who is even in position to take over the team? Seems like his assistants will likely walk away with him...

Nate can take the blame but our players are the main problem. Trae and company will have a new coach next season, if not before, and I believe the chances are high that coach won't workout. Do we even have any players that are leaders?

Respect to Nate. Falling on one's sword, that is leadership!

It is up to a coach to be able to get the most out of their players. Nate isn't doing that.HMFFL wrote:Nate can take the blame but our players are the main problem. I do think Trae needs to adapt because this whole iso-trae where he dribbles until 5 seconds left and throws up an awful shot doesn't work.

Re: Shams: McMillan strongly considered resigning.
Why do the Hawks want to keep him to finish the rest of the season? That's fool hardy.
This is just going to breed more toxicity. Players know he doesn't want to be here now and won't be back next season.
Just rip off the band aid and install the interim (whoever that is) and let the chips fall where they will for the rest of the season. No need to soft roll this.
Team doesn't look happy playing, fans aren't happy watching.
Let's get it over and done with and let 2023 be whatever it will be without Nate.

Re: Shams: McMillan strongly considered resigning.
Koonin might call the Shams report trtash, but Nate isn't outright denying any if the information.
ESPNRealGM Wiretap wrote:Nate McMillan To 'Move Past' Report Of Potential Mid-Season Retirement
"We have a race to prepare for," McMillan said. "We're trying to get our guys healthy and make another run at the playoffs, but the things that were reported, look, I'm here to coach this year, and I've talked to [owner] Tony Ressler many times, and our goal is to make the playoffs. And that's what I'm working towards."
McMillan, 58, said he had no immediate reaction to the report. He is in the middle of his third season with the Hawks, who are 17-18 and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
"I read that article briefly. I've never spoke to that reporter before. I think the last two weeks he's written a couple of articles with some sources in our organization that are making some comments about me and some things that I'm saying and doing," said McMillan on Friday.
McMillan added that he'll coach out the rest of this year, then re-assess his situation during the offseason.
McMillan added that retirement is potentially in the picture.
"Look, at the end of the year, I'll do as I've always done. I'll talk with my family and see if that flame, that fire, to continue next season, but that's the end of the season.
"All of us think about retiring, but that's at the end of the season. We're going to move past that, that story."

Trae hasn't had a coach that's able to get the best out of him or his teammates. Maybe it will take Coach #20 before one can get the best out of Trae.dms269 wrote:It is up to a coach to be able to get the most out of their players. However, the cracks began to show in July when sources say Hawks governor Tony Ressler pushed the front office to go on a cost-cutting spree, which resulted in a top-heavy and structurally deficient roster. The moves came months after Ressler told the media he wasn't scared of the luxury tax and made private assurances to players that he planned to spend what was necessary to build a contending team.
The short-sighted plan chased off the architect of the team's rebuild, gutted the roster, and left gaping holes in the front office. As a result, 2023 presents the most perilous era in Atlanta in many years.

Re: Shams: McMillan strongly considered resigning.
I do wonder if this sentiment will remain or if Landry will find it necessary to make this inevitable coaching change sooner than later.
Who steps in as Interim HC to even make this worthwhile?

Re: Shams: McMillan strongly considered resigning.
It's something strange to have seen him making this team believe, and reach the ECF, and see now how is far away from saying "believe" to this guys. I just don't understand how it was not possible for him to keep this way of motivating the players like he did two years ago. How can someone change like that?

He kept LP's offense and staff and tweaked it as the interim.
Then last season he brought in his own staff and system. I complained last season I didn't like his offense and this season it's even more ISO, attacking mismatches, and playing in the mid-range. When he said at the start of the season that he'll do it his way despite what the analytics says about 3pt shooting - I had a feeling we would be doomed.

Right
And I had a feeling we would doomed when everybody overreacted to the MIA series and was asking for another star guard because they would eat all balls with Trae, and it could ruin our bench to get him, and a bit more when it looked like we were doing trades to avoid luxury tax.
We already had two Cs unable to shoot 3s, and they lost several 3pts shooters to add a guard not great at shooting 3s.
Well done, just when the last NBA Finals show two teams that can put 5 guys on the floor shooting 3s when they need it (they don't have to run it all game long, but at least they can).
I wanted to see at least a stretch where they test Hunter as clear 2nd offensive option. They did a stretch of just not feeding Collins, but these balls didn't end up in this hand of Hunter.
The roster had potential and could be improved, the guys still have potential, but we need a guy like Riley to drive this franchise

I don't think The Trae/DJ combination is the problem. It's when they are paired with the bench players they haven't been good. They both look for their shots first at the expense of running the offense. But then again the bench without Bogi was so weak. The Holidaze (who should both never play - one or the other preferably Aaron), a rookie in AJ, JJ who is more rookie than not, and OO.
