Game Thread: Hawks @ Hornets -- 2/13

Hornets face Hawks looking to snap seven-game skid

Image

The Charlotte Hornets are mired in a seven-game losing streak and are now tied for dead last in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks, meanwhile, have somewhat righted the ship as of late by winning 10 of their last 16 games.

Atlanta’s starting five consists of point guard Trae Young who averages about 27 points and 10 assists per game but is only making around 33% of his 3-pointers. Shooting guard Dejounte Murray is having a strong season averaging 20 points and over six assists per game. Forward De’Andre Hunter averages over 15 points and hits around 36% of his 3s. Power forward John Collins is a 13-point, seven-rebound guy but he’s only hitting 25% of his 3-point attempts. Center Clint Capella scores an opportunistic 12 points per game and leads the team with over 11 rebounds.

Atlanta has a strong eight-man rotation and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them play better in the second half of the season than they have up to this point.

The focus for the Hornets after trading away center Mason Plumlee is to get more meaningful reps for the team’s young big men. Mark Williams has showed a lot of promise during his rookie season. Third-year big man Nick Richards has taken a noticeable step forward this year. Second-year project Kai Jones has bounced between the Hornets and the Greensboro Swarm in the G-League, and the skinny pogo stick may or may not turn into something. Now is the time to find out.

Charlotte’s season is less about winning and losing at this point - unfortunately - and more about player development. We’ll see if the Hornets array of young bigs are up to the test against proven vets like John Collins and Clint Capela.

Hawks are a six point favorite.
We need this win!

What was Trae thinking? A long iso 3 against a 7 footer and it gets blocked.

I'm glad it happened, too. Trae has to learn better shot discipline. His bad shot selection and shoddy defense killed the momentum down the stretch.

I hope his next coach plays this video for him and explains how bad his decision making becomes when he chooses to play hero ball instead of trusting his teammates.

If Hawks lose again this week, Ressler and Company have no choice but to make a coaching change during the All Star Break:

Minus-13 in 17min for AJ
Minus-15 in 13min for Jalen
The young guys are hitting a wall or Nate is not using them rightly... he puts both at the same time, I always thought it was a bad idea and that it would be better to put one young guy with more experienced ones, and the other young at another moment also with 4 experienced guys.

There is 48 of games, he played them a total of 30 minutes, he can clearly avoid playing them at the same time.

OO needs more minutes.

Trae Young makes seven of his field goal attempts but turns the ball over five times.

Hawks had 74 points in the paint to Charlotte's 54.

Charlotte lead the entire game.

We made all of our free throws but Charlotte shot the ball at such a high % that we couldn't keep up.

^And our execution down the stretch was abysmal. Trae went the hero-ball/bad defense route and it cost us.

This was all about DEFENSE, and the lack thereof.
Every rotation was a step late, every closeout was a half ass effort, we never got into guys, zero ball pressure, no communication on picks or in general. The spacing on the zone was cluttered, lots of scrambling. No ball pressure or ball deny, the Hornets were just stepping into shots. A very lackadaisical effort.
Just once I'd like to see our 'defenders' force a stop, get a timely steal, a block, a deflection, ball pressure, deny the ball....ANYTHING!

It is odd that a starting lineup with Dejounte, DeAndre and Clint could be so ineffective defensively.

I don't get it. Whatever the 'scheme' is - it's not working. Then there's this...

He's a sieve on defense but our 'defensive' coach keeps trotting him out.

DJM isn't the point of attack defender the team needs. Due to his slight frame he's best guarding pgs/combo guards. Hunter can only guard SFs it seems. Doesn't move the needle as a help defender or off ball, his stl and blk stats kind of confirms it.

Capela strengths are rebounding and rim protection. There is slippage on both I'm noticing. Hunter and Capela both had very poor strips or blown bunnies at the rim, I've counted about 9-10 between the two this game.

New coaching could likely get better defensive efficiency out of this bunch, but idk that it's worth the squeeze with these core defenders.

Because he's just using him like he was doing last season, not thinking about the fact that roster has changed.
Last year, he played a lot, coming from the bench, but playing with Gallo, Okongwu, Wright, and they were efficient, they had a the best Net ratings of the team, so they at least were better than opponent bench, or even some opponent starters as Bogi for example was playing a lot in the fourth.
But the ball movement and players movement were totally different with these guys, I remember some quick extra passes from Bogi, or more rarely Gallo, that I never saw this season
