Knicks seek to push Hawks further down in standings

The New York Knicks will look for their fifth victory in six games when they travel to play the Atlanta Hawks, the team directly behind them in the Eastern Conference, on Wednesday in the final game before the All-Star break.

The Knicks are seventh in the Eastern Conference and hold a 2½-game lead over the Hawks. But Atlanta has won two of three meetings against the Knicks this season and could secure the tiebreaker against New York with a victory. A win by New York would provide further distance from the Hawks and pull it closer to avoiding the play-in tournament.

The Knicks defeated the Brooklyn Nets 124-106 on Monday and have won seven of their last 11. The Hawks are coming off a disappointing 144-138 loss at Charlotte on Monday. Charlotte, which had lost seven straight and has only 16 wins, beat Atlanta for the third time this season.

New York’s acquisition of Josh Hart from Portland is already paying dividends. Hart, who averages 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds, scored a season-high 27 against the Nets.

“There are few players in the league who impact winning the way Josh does,” Thibodeau said. “Those guys help you build a winning culture. He’s going to give the game whatever it needs. If it needs scoring, he’ll give you scoring. He just gives the team a lot of confidence.”

Atlanta got 12 points and five rebounds from Saddiq Bey in his debut with the team. Bey got the start when John Collins missed the game with a hip flexor injury. Bey was acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline.

Hawks Head Coach Nate McMillan said, “We just have to come out with urgency and be really urgent on the defensive end. We’ve got to establish our defense so we can get stops and teams aren’t putting up 30-point quarters against us.”

They might have the most efficient backcourt in the league. I don't see how the Hawks can overtake them in the standings with Hart in the fold for them.

Would've been the wiser choice of waiting on this deadline and striking the deal for Hart instead of the move for DJM.

This would be the perfect time to unleash Bruno Fernando to let loose a couple of hard fouls into Julius Randle...

Hawks have checked out prior to the All Star Break.

It's clear all the guys need a break.

It'd probably be best if neither Nate or Trae came back...

This team is sorry as hell.
What an embarrassment. I will hold the players accountable while the majority of fans continue to hold the coaching staffs.

We need a new offensive philosophy, what we are watching is offensive.
Take this opportunity with the break coming up to relieve Nate if his duties. Let Nicky V run it and let it play out.

The All-Star would be an ideal time so we'll see if Nate gets releived. The off-season better consistent of a lot of wheeling and dealing.

Fire Nate and bring in Quin

Nate is Mike Woodson 2.0 - zero offensive system + all platitudes on defense

I'm blaming both players and staff, and management stopping Schlenk last year before the end of the project, just to create this.

Starts at the top.
Look who is running the front office. Look who is on the coaching staff, Look at the bench. This kind of stuff has a trickle down effect.
The players have to do their part, the coaches have to put the players in the best possible position to win - everything is hard on offense. This new NBA has left Nate behind and he's unwilling to adjust. I think he de-emphasized 3pt shooting when he said he didn't care what the analytics said about 3pt shooting to start the season, he's about the midrange and attacking mismatches. So it seems to me the players aren't confident in taking and making them.

Schlenk deserves blame in this too. He extended Collins and Capela for various reasons. One is suppose to hit 3s at a reasonable clip and finish efficiently while the other is suppose to rebound and protect the rim at an elite rate. They are not holding up their part of the bargain.

Collins should have had surgery to fix that finger.

Maybe that helps maybe not. I just know the Hawks will need to take the hit in value once they finally decide to trade him. It was painful watching him try to defend Randle knowing he could bully him all game long.

Lately come to the conclusion the frontcourt is not fit for playoff success any longer. Cavs 1-3 position players are similar to Atl's but their bigs alone gives them a top 5 defensive team.

^IDK, man. We've already made personnel changes, moving half of the roster and multiple rotation pieces last year. The issues this year feel tactical. Trae, Collins having down years in an outdated style of play.

Landry needs to nail the coaching hire. Then the GM and new HC can decide what players to keep.

I just don't see it with this frontcourt including Hunter to a lesser extent. Unicorns at the 4-5 positions is becoming the norm nowadays, and the Hawks need to upgrade. Mark Williams, Duren, Kessler are becoming the standard. Wemby, Mobley, and Holgrem are the next tier.

Hawks can't go to war with the current guys, I just don't see how even if I squint hard enough.
