^Notable that he mentioned the owners and the GM in his letter...but not any players.

Not even generically or as a whole.

I expect big changes.

Quin Snyder, Hawks agree to 5-year deal

Is Snyder the right hire for the Hawks?

He should be. The Hawks have been set on trying to do a better job developing talent and creating the type of climate and identity more conducive to building a team that wins consistently. All of those things have long been problems in the past.

Former coach Nate McMillan led the club to a surprising playoff run to the Eastern Conference finals. But...[h]e lacked offensive creativity, which is one of Snyder’s strengths. The Hawks were so convinced Snyder was far and away the best coach on the market that they bypassed the opportunity to interview potential candidates who would become available after the season.

Why was it important to hire Snyder now?

In addition to keeping other teams from pursuing Snyder, the Hawks’ front office, now led by general manager Landry Fields and assistant Kyle Korver, understands there are several major decisions on the table. Snyder’s in-season arrival will allow him to evaluate the situation from the inside.

Among the questions:
  • Is Trae Young a player that will buy into the new culture and is the type of player they want to build around?
  • Should John Collins be traded?
  • How should they approach the future of guard Dejounte Murray, who is one year away from free agency?
  • How should they attack the approaching luxury tax issues?

Will he have more say than just coaching?

Snyder will not be given a lofty title like President of Basketball Operations. But it’s expected that he will have a significant voice in personnel decisions.

While he clearly wanted the Hawks’ job from the outset, he also had some leverage in negotiations and was in a position to seek that. Snyder and Fields will very likely be a team in this roster makeover.

Nice way to start his tenure as Coach. Hopefully he takes the guys out for lunch and then a nice team building activity.

I guess they're going to wing it then.
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

What's going with the coaching staff. It'll be weird when he subs all those guys out in the summer.

I've been wondering the same thing all weekend.

I hope we keep Prunty on the payroll. Dude is so low key and low maintenance, plus he seems to have a good rapport with the players. He makes a good bridge from one era to the next. (I actually hopes he gets to coach on Tuesday night as well.)

I can't imagine that Jamelle McMillan stays on past the summer. I'm surprised he didn't leave with his pops last week.

I've never been fond of Nick Van Exel, as a coach or player. I'm okay if he's gone.

From a Jazz fan... Congrats on the great hire. Q is an amazing basketball mind. Wishing him well with the Hawks.

Thanks.

I'm still in disbelief that our ownership actually pulled it off.

You guys seem to have hit the jackpot with young Will Hardy working under the tutelage of Trader Danny.

For sure. Snyder was the right coach for the Jazz at the time. Now Hardy appears to be the right man for the current version of the Jazz.

Snyder really is an amazing coach. Haters will say he can't adjust in the playoffs, but I don't buy into that narrative. This is the same guy that tried something no other coach would EVER have done vs Harden in the 2019 playoffs, and literally had the Jazz play behind him. (Look up the videos, if you're unfamiliar.) It was crazy, but inventive & showed how creative his mind is.

Under Snyder, Gobert went from G-League project to 3 time DPOY and had a scheme around him that played perfectly to his skill-set. The Jazz were tops in open 3-point shots (especially from the corners) from 2020-2022. Jazz had the best record in the league 3 years ago. That doesn't happen without great coaching.

It'll be interesting to see how Trae & he mesh, as Snyder really isn't into the point-position carrying the playmaker/ballhandler role, on it's own. (It's a team effort.)

Best of luck moving forward.
