Welcome to Atlanta -- TyTy Washington

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Sat Jul 1, 2023 9:51 pm

This dude can ball. Has some of the shake of other KY guards like Ty Maxey and Immanuel Quickley.

This is a big acquisition for us.

TyTy Washington (Kentucky, PG/SG, Freshman)

The Hawks could look at Washington to absorb some ball-handling duties and take pressure off Trae Young. The Kentucky guard split time on and off the ball [in college], though his playmaking/passing feel may be his most translatable strength. A strong assist-to-turnover ratio, plus a 17-assist game when backcourt partner Sahvir Wheeler sat with an injury, has helped paint Washington as a guard who can quarterback an offense or second unit.

7. TyTy Washington (Kentucky, PG/SG, Freshman)

Coming off a 28-point, five-assist game against Tennessee and Kennedy Chandler, Washington continues to build a case to lottery teams with three-level scoring, passing IQ and efficiency. He's now shooting 44.1 percent off the catch and 46.6 percent on pull-ups, and he compensates for his lack of exciting burst with touch and length for finishing, having made 16-of-28 floaters and 72.0 percent of his attempts around the basket. With 81 assists to 30 turnovers, Washington has demonstrated plenty of shot-making skill and playmaking feel. Scouts are still trying to figure out who he is at the next level—a lead guard, a combo, a 2 or simply a well-rounded reserve.

From 2022 Draft Cycle:

NBA Mock Draft

16. Hawks: TyTy Washington, G, Kentucky

Height: 6' 3" | Weight: 195 | Age: 20 | Freshman

Atlanta could badly use another guard to run the team and prop up lineups when Trae Young rests. Washington’s ability to function at either backcourt spot should make him an interesting candidate here. Despite an uneven freshman year, there’s enough optimism surrounding Washington’s context—he played through injury and Kentucky guards have often fared better in the NBA—that he maintains a good chance of going in the top 20. Washington isn’t a great athlete or overly tall for a combo guard, and he's a little bit polarizing among teams considering he was quite old for a freshman. But he should benefit from the fact this is a pretty thin guard draft and profiles as a potentially solid rotation option.

From 2022:

TyTy Washington | 6-3 guard | 20 years old | Kentucky

After a bad start to the season against Duke, TyTy Washington has just worked his way into being the guy most expected entering his freshman season at Kentucky. He’s a terrific three-level scorer, averaging 14 points, four rebounds and four assists while shooting 50 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3 and 81 percent from the line. His passing has been high level in an off-ball role next to Sahvir Wheeler, finding his teammates when they’re available. He’s been quite dangerous out of half-court sets, both as a ball-screen threat and as a spot-up player, attacking closeouts to get into his floater game or driving and dishing for his teammates. He makes good decisions and doesn’t turn the ball over. Generally, Washington profiles nicely in the same way the recent run of Kentucky off-ball guards in Tyler Herro and Tyrese Maxey have. He can play both on the ball or away from it, get efficient offense and make high-level passing reads. Some scouts see him more as a sixth man as opposed to a starter because of his lack of athleticism, but I think he separates enough and processes the way defenders play him at a high enough level to where he profiles as a starter in the right situation at the NBA level. He’ll be best next to a big wing creator or a bigger lead guard, allowing him to defend point guards and not be forced to initiate everything.

Pro Comparisons for Top 2022 Draft Prospects

TyTy Washington Jr. (Kentucky, PG/SG, Freshman)Image

NBA comparison: Derrick White, D'Angelo Russell

Well-rounded and competitive defensively, TyTy Washington Jr. can look like Derrick White, an easy fit for any lineup with his on- and off-ball skills and the ability to guard both backcourt positions. But Washington may have more lead-guard potential and shooting prowess, which could allow him to look like D'Angelo Russell.

Comparisons to White and Russell also stem from the fact that neither is a standout athlete. If there is a fear with Washington, it's over his ability to create enough separation.

But Washington compensates for limited explosion with shooting versatility, floater touch and finishing craft. And he flashes the type of passing skill that should help convince teams he can be their primary ball-handler.

I believe these are the numbers from his actual NBA Games last season.

Probably why Houston felt comfortable gifting him away:

Seems to match the team numbers with HOU, where offense was 6pts worse per 100 possessions with than without him, but the positive thing is that the defense was 8pts better with him than without.
Basically what we should have got with Dunn if he had played a bit more with ATL
