Game Thread: Young Trae vs Young Thunder

SGA-Less Thunder host streaking Hawks on a busy Night of NBA Basketball

Image

Atlanta is going on the road to try and get their fifth straight win on Monday night. They will be facing the Oklahoma City Thunder, but OKC is going to be without their best player.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been listed as out for tomorrow night's game. The Thunder have also listed Kenrich Williams as out.

There are only two players listed on the Hawks' injury report. Rookie Kobe Bufkin (thumb) remains out, as does Wesley Matthews (Calf). De'Andre Hunter left the game briefly with a right pinky finger dislocation, but he did return in the game and he was not listed at all on the injury report for tomorrow.

That is obviously huge news for the game tomorrow. Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the best players in the NBA and without him, OKC becomes far less of a threat. That does not mean they will not be tough however because that is a roster that is full of talent.

We missed too many WIDE OPEN shots from range and too many missed shots inside, still got to within 6 with 3 minutes left after being down 19.

Wasn't a blowout, but glad I missed it still.
Where the offseason has more buzz happens.

My takes from the Game:

  • SGA is undeniably a star. Trae should take note at how easily he gets buckets in transition and the use of screens/spacing.
  • OKC has an almost unfair amount of young talent. We could handle SGA, Chet and a bunch of role players. But also having Jalen Williams, Lu Dort and Josh Giddey is an embarrassment of riches.
  • Trae's defense was spotty. More effort, but some inexplicably bad moments
  • Trae has slowly reverted back to stagnation/lack of movement on offense when he doesn't have the ball. With his offensive gravity, if he would just cut to the weakside after giving the ball away, it would clear space for DeJounte/Jalen to create with the ball in his hands.
  • Cason Wallace > Kobe Bufkin (Kid is a beast.)
  • Jalen Williams > DeJounte Murray (I really hate that we missed out on him in the 2022 draft.)
  • SGA > Young Trae (I was reluctant to admit it because of Trae's superior playmaking, but Shai is a star. We had the draft capital to trade for him in 2018 BTW.)
  • Hawks were resilient and clawed their way back into the game late. That's an improvement on previous seasons.
  • Jalen and Okongwu had underwhelming games, hard for us to overcome that plus Trae's shooting woes.
  • I have to seriously question if Okongwu is ready to handle the starting Center role just yet. He's undersized, foul prone and a poor rebounder.
  • The big men in the SW Division are so uniquely talented: Wemby, Zion and Chet are a handful.
  • We have the coaching to compete but are still lacking the top end talent. :(

Why did Trae just jump out of the way instead of staying in front and deterring the ball handler?
Just an inexplicably bad decision.

Comically bad exchange here. Trae has to lead the defender to the weakside and run him through a couple of screens.

Cason Wallace is too good of an on ball defender for such a lazy sequence.

Also...what the heck is Saddiq even thinking with this pass?

At some point, the coaching and offense need to be tweaked to play more to the kid's strengths....

Mainly those guys missing in rhythm shots and OKC making step back decently contested 3s was the difference. These two must make those open shots.

I'd expect Hunter to be off considering his pinky. Imagine Grant Williams in that spot tho... Positives are they showed grit against a superior team.
