2025 Prospect Spotlight: Jase Richardson

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Wed Feb 26, 2025 3:02 pm

There are some obvious concerns regarding how he'd fit with our current personnel, but the dude seems like a special player.

Reminds me of Tyrese Maxey. Could be a replacement for Trae Young. (He'd fit perfectly next to jumbo PG like Dyson Daniels)

Jase Richardson (Michigan State, SG)[

Size: 6'3", 185 lbs
Age: 19
Nationality: USA
Pro comparison: Cason Wallace

There is debate over what a best-case outcome looks like for Jase Richardson, who's 6'3" and hadn't demonstrated much playmaking through January.

And then he was inserted into the starting lineup in February and immediately put up 29 points against Oregon. He's continued to score efficiently by picking the right spots to attack with his dribble and pull-up.

It's also becoming more evident that his role can mask some self-creation. Regardless, the idea of a valuable off-ball scorer and secondary ball-handler is gaining steam behind his shooting efficiency, finishing craft and ball-screen decision-making.

Making 44.0 percent of his spot-up threes, 48.8 percent of his dribble jumpers and 73.5 percent of his layups, with 46 assists to 21 turnovers, accurate shotmaking and feel for the game could have teams valuing fit over upside.

Seriously under consideration with that Kings Pick...especially if we decide it's time to move on from Trae. :sour:

If Trae is leaving, Jase next to Dyson makes so much sense for a team in need of at rim finishing, on ball scoring chops.

Kid's combination of off-the-dribble shooting + finishing ability places him stylistically pretty close to Donovan Mithchell.
I'm not saying he's that caliber of prospect, but that's the model for how he can and could be used in the league.

Jase Richardson (Michigan State, SG)

Size: 6'3", 185 lbs
Age: 19
Nationality: USA
Pro comparison: Reed Sheppard

Jase Richardson closed the regular season with 22 points against Iowa and 18 points against Michigan. And it's become clearer by the month that he offers more creativity than the early numbers suggest.

While he's been incredibly efficient off the ball, he's also been one of the nation's most efficient ball-screen scorers thanks to his feel on drives, elite finishing and 49.1 percent pull-up shooting.

Some teams may have difficult seeing upside in a 6'3" guard who's not known for playmaking.

Jase in a pure scorer's role between Dyson, Zacch and Jalen could be extremely useful.

Top 50 prospects to watch in March Madness

10. Jase Richardson, PG/SG, Michigan State

Height: 6-3 | Freshman | TS%: 64.9%
First game: No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 15 Bryant, Friday, 10 p.m. (TBS)

Richardson turned the corner in a major way over the second half of the season, finding another notch with his aggressiveness and productivity shouldering greater offensive responsibility efficiently as a starter for Michigan State. His pace, skill level, feel for the game and shotmaking prowess give him an outstanding framework to build off at 19 years old, especially with the intensity he brings defensively.

Though Richardson's somewhat pedestrian measurements (6-foot-2 in shoes and 185 pounds) might limit his ceiling to an extent in the eyes of NBA teams, the way he affects winning on both ends of the court, along with his tremendous statistical profile, can't be discounted, especially if he can continue to make strides as a slasher and passer. -- Givony

Jase Richardson | 6-3 guard | 19 years old | Michigan State

Richardson is one of the true breakout risers of this draft class, a player who rarely played on-ball in high school who has flourished this season getting more of those reps for Michigan State. Few players navigate tight spaces quite like Richardson, as he has a Jalen Brunson-like ability to find creases in the defense with his pristine footwork. He averaged 12 points per game this year while shooting 51 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3 and 84 percent from the line. However, it’s his play in the last stretch of the season that has made believers out of most evaluators across the NBA. In his last 11 games, Richardson is averaging 17.3 points and shooting 50 percent from the field, 42 percent from 3 and 82 percent from the line while getting there five times per game. He’s also getting five rebounds and dishing out 1.7 assists while posting a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio. He’s made a believer out of even Tom Izzo, who typically avoids playing freshmen.

So what are the concerns? Richardson is smaller, with scouts wondering if he cracks 6-2 without shoes. He’s also not wildly explosive, which is a funny statement to say about the son of dunk contest legend Jason Richardson. Defensively, he’s tough and competes in college, but will he be fast enough to hold up in the NBA? All eyes will be on Jase Richardson in the NCAA Tournament. If he leads Michigan State on a deep run, his stock has a chance to skyrocket.

If he's there at #13/14, I say take a gamble.

He'd make an above average backup or maybe even a replacement for TY.
