Just a reminder that Kobe Bufkin is only 21 years old...

I suspected that a major decision on his future was coming with how much he played in Summer League.

I wish him the best.

My thoughts on KB from 13 months ago:

Jamaaliver wrote:I will say, Kobe Bufkin probably had a better first year as a pro than Dyson Daniels or Jalen Johnson.

IMHO, Kobe has a higher ceiling than Dyson Daniels. He's already a better scorer and shooter (though the NBA numbers don't reflect it.)

Kobe is also a more effective defender (at his size/position) than Jalen is.

My concern long-term is that Dyson and Zach's arrival prevents him from getting minutes at backup SG.
And Bufkin likely isn't a pure enough playmaker to be the backup PG...at least here.

I believe the kid will bloom into a really solid two-way player. I'm just no longer convinced that will occur in a Hawks uniform. :(

And now it's official.

I do believe this is the one prospect in recent years we'll regret walking away from so quickly.

Injuries are tough but they matter. Kobe might still have a future as a rotation player and I don't think that the Hawks just wanted to dump him for nothing but the move clearly opened salary for a solid rotation player that can bump Mo and Vit down a spot in the rotation

Hawks have more than enough young players to develop but it's time to win

After rebuffing trade interest in former first-round pick Kobe Bufkin earlier in the offseason, the Hawks became more open to the idea of moving him after the Las Vegas Summer League concluded, according to Grant Afseth of RG.org.

While Bufkin posted strong averages of 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game in four Vegas outings, he struggled to score efficiently, making just 35.5% of his shots from the floor, including 25.9% of his three-point attempts. The Hawks, who are hoping to contend in what looks like a wide-open Eastern Conference, are focused on players who can help them win right now and weren’t sure Bufkin fit that bill, as Afseth explains.

Bufkin was ultimately sent to Brooklyn, though the Pacers also registered some interest, sources tell RG.org.

6'4" Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas thinks he's worth $40m per season. He is eventually on his way out.

Next off-season the Nets will need to add $40m in salary to be at the leagues MINIMUM payroll of $139m.

So, Kobe needs to focus on his game, his shooting, and he can lock in a long-term contract. The talent can beeee there if he wants it.

Ball must go in circle at a higher %.

This is a really intriguing take on the Kobe Bufkin trade.

Sam posits that KB was traded not because of basketball reasons but because of coming salary cap decisions:

  • Trae and Dyson are waiting on extensions.
  • Asa and Risacher are expecting big pay increases on guaranteed rookie deals
  • Hawks currently project to have 2 first round picks next summer.
  • There simply wasn't enough future money around to commit to an unproven commodity in Bufkin.

Trying to make sense of why they'd make Bufkin part of back to back draft class busts. All those factors came into play. Depth of the roster, Vit being dirt cheap and more reliable than him.

ZR is making big money for a rook, right around OO's salary they have to cut salary even further coming up. Final note, don't take on Michigan prospects, they bust way more than normal.

Seems like common sense. We have talent that needs to be extended if we ever want to win. Bufkin was absolutely let go due to his salary and because he can't shoot. Finding other players that have a field goal % of 37 and 38% is easy.

Glad to hear that Kobe was not blindsided with the trade announcement.

Shout out to Onsi and Quin for keeping Kobe in the loop.
