Kind of weird that NJ and Indiana are talking trade given that they are the 2 teams directly behind us in the standings.

What I've heard is that the deal would be:
Vince Carter
Marcus Williams
Jamal Magloire

for
Jermaine O'Neal

I was curious if people thought the deal (if it went through) would make the respective teams more or less likely to pass us in the standings?

I don't think it's a great deal for either team but Indy would definitely get the better end of the deal if that trade were to go down IMO. I don't think I would trade Vince for JO straight up...especially with Williams and Boone giving you decent and cheap production as the starting front court. JO is more injury prone than Vince and he's had a much worse year up to this point. Indy has Granger and Dunleavy but at least Vince is still an all-star caliber player...JO is on a serious decline and he's paid Duncan/Kobe type money.

New Jersey will continue to be a middle pack team if they do this one. I think they should rebuild and trade Carter and Kidd while they still have value.

But how much value due they have? I don't see them being able to get a stud young guy for Kidd or Carter. They are going to either have to take on a bad contract or take on a more expensive older player.

My two cents:

Talent-wise Indiana is getting the better of it.

Chemistry-wise New Jersey is getting the better of it. Jason Kidd would take more control of the resulting team.

I don't think it makes either team that much better.

I would be very concerned if I were Indiana fan. VC has shown time after time he's not reliable. He's played with great players and seems to get worse every year. On the other hand, the Pacers need to get rid of O'Neal. He's injured prone and a crying baby who gets paid franchise player type of money and refuses to carry his team. I think at the end of the day, neither team would get much better. But, at least you can see their GMs are trying to improve their roster. Not sure if that's our case.

VC for JO is he lesser of two evils for Indiana as JO has been killing that team all year. Marcus Williams was also included in the deal which would aid their backup PG problem.

That's true, their contracts will hurt their value a bit. But they are so good I think teams needing one piece will want to make a deal. Dallas would love to have Kidd and might be willing to deal someone like Diop and Devin Harris etc.

This is a wierd deal. I don't think JO is a HOF talent or anything but he gives the Nets some talent in a non-perimeter position so I'd do it if I were Jers. It's a strange deal for Indy unless they have another deal lined up to move Granger of Dunleavy...

Otherwise their starting 5 looks like:

I guess they could bring either Mike or Granger off the bench and have a nasty second unit... that's actually not a bad idea.
