ESPN.com Hawks-Suns Preview

In Joe Johnson's last game in Phoenix, he sparked a fourth-quarter rally to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a win over the Phoenix Suns. To snap out of their current funk, the Hawks could use a similar performance from the former Sun.

Johnson looks to break out of his shooting slump and help the struggling Hawks pull off another upset over his former team when they visit the surging Suns on Tuesday.

Johnson spent three and a half seasons with Phoenix between 2002-05, helping the Suns from a lottery team to a perennial contender in the competitive Western Conference.

He asked to be traded after the 2005 playoffs, however, and Phoenix accommodated him by sending him to the Hawks in a contentious sign-and-trade deal that led to a legal battle among Hawks owners that still hasn't been settled.

The Hawks (18-22), who have lost 10 of their last 14 games, including five of six.

Johnson's recent shooting woes could make it even more difficult. He's averaging 15.3 points and shooting only 34.0 percent from the field in the first three games of the Hawks' five-game road trip, which concludes when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

The Suns (32-13) have won six of their last seven games, holding opponents to 98.9 points and 43.1 percent shooting from the field in that stretch. They allowed a season-low point total in their 88-77 win over Chicago on Sunday.

Phoenix is the highest-scoring team in the league at 109.5 points per game, but coach Mike D'Antoni has seen improvement in his club's ability to stop other teams.

I love the auction of the pick. Great work as always.

Line on the game varies a little by casino, but I'm taking the Phoenix by 10 with an o/u of 207. Give me the Hawks and the over. We traditionally play better against the up tempo teams. Possibly it's because since they keep running so do we. We never employ the vaunted prevent offense that's been the cornerstone of many a 2nd half collapse for us.

Good thread gsu. Its hard to tell, if AJ plays like he did against Portland then we have a chance because we got the horses to run with them. This should be a big game for Al... He has a size advantage on Amare and Amare is terrible on D anyway, lets see if he has any post game worth mentioning. Anyway, the team has to be disciplined to win this one: need to play D the whole game and run when we can, Al needs to be big on the boards and keep those outlets passes flowing. Josh needs to be at his best as the "anti-fast break weapon", Joe needs to hit his shot, Marv needs to make Grant hill look his age... Should be a tough game but its a better matchup than Dallas or Detroit or an elite team in that mold.

You forgot the most obvious choice for the poll, gsuteke: Woody's got incriminating photos of BK from back during their free-love days in Indiana.

This look like a game the Hawks will not blow a big lead and lose. It will either be a close game where both teams will make their runs. It is either that or Suns will probably show the Hawks how you build a big lead and keep it.

I'm pretty sure the Hawks get blown out in this one with how bad our perimeter defense is guarding the 3. I'm sure we get outcoached and outplayed again! I just can't be optomistic about the Hawks anymore. I hope they win of course but i'm done predicting anything on the way we might play.

If the Hawks have to lose this one, then it better be by 40+ points, so hopefully Woody gets fired.

I think this can be a close one if we somehow manage to stay in the game after the first half. Trail by 10 or more at the half and the game is already over.

I don't think he Hawks would beat anyone coming off of that Portland loss. Confidence has to be at a season low and frustration at a season high. Fortunately the Suns don't care much for defense or rebounding. Just pray they aren't hitting every 3 and Amare doesn't go for 40. I hope we give Horford a chance to work on Amare, he could get his season high tonight.

JJ is listed as day to day with an ankle problem. Strange how the actual injury was never reported.

We need to attack Amare. He will do everything he can to avoid that second foul.
