Which PG should we go after?

Post#1 » by tbhawksfan » Tue Feb 5, 2008 1:26 pm

There has been so much talk about our PG situation. It is our weakest position.

It doesn't look to get much better next season either. Law will develop, but something tells me he would be a liability going in as our #1 PG, unless we had another starter quality guy behind him. AJ/Lue are expiring and neither should be seen as the solution for us. With a young PG in Law we need someone a little better than them.

Most of the talk has been about Dre Miller. Kidd has been mentioned. Calderon etc....

I think the one I like is to get a guy like Watson from SEA. He would come in as the #1 PG, but also would be OK to slide out of Acie's way in a season or so. They wouldn't cost much either. Expirings might do it.

WatsonAJ/Law would get us through this season and Watson/Law should be OK for the mong run too.

Another possibility is to aim a bit higher and include Chil. Lowry/Navarro for Chil and expirings? We might not want to re-sign Chil. We might be able to do better for the team getting a good PG and an NBA shooter.

Watson looks like a definite option. While I know some of the stats point toward Watson, I'm still a fan of getting Miller. The reason is because of one main stat: PPG. He regularly scores more than Watson, and that makes him a much more dangerous PG. It's one thing if a PG can get a bunch of dimes and few TOs, but he will not garner much respect if he can't find ways to score. Some will say that Miller can't shoot, but he obviously is good enough to find ways to score far more than Watson who's shooting 38% from 3pt range. Miller is an aggressive and capable PG. That kind of PG would push this team forward far more than Watson or many other good PGs in this league. I wanna see BK go get him, not because he put up 29 on us last night, but because he's the final piece of the puzzle to make this team a playoff team.

I was against it earlier. I am in favor of getting Miller even it meant getting rid of Law. I would much rather go after Sam Cassell. He should be a cheaper option for the Hawks and asking price shouldn't be that high. Perhaps Shelden, expiring, and 2nd round pick.

Miller would be the best "fit" for what the team wants to do offensively because he can push the pace so well.

Watson definitely brings a different dimension, he is a decent distributor although not as dynamic as Miller, he is a solid but not elite 3 point shooter, he is a great defender. I'd be OK with grabbing him because it would strengthen the rotation quite a bit.

Choices, if there are any....

Is it realistically possible to get Kidd? His presence on the court improves everyone. Whether the wheels have fallen off in New Jersey or not remains to be seen, but he definitely needs a new environment.
If Portland can't get him, we should see what we can offer. If they insist on Smoove, you have to decline.
Is Marvin worth the switch? I would think so, because I don't think you will sign Marvin and the 2 Joshes to long-term deals. We need to take a chance on a leader, and IMO, Kidd may be the best available at that position. I would not be surprised to see things run smoother with him on the court.
If you can't get Kidd, is Monta Ellis gettable? He will continue to play behind Baron Davis, and would take the lead role here. Do we have anything on interest for Golden State/Mullin?
I'm interested in getting someone who complements our players. I don't see an option getting Devin Harris or Andre Miller.

I dont think Kidd is worth it. After watching the Nets and then seeing him in person Saturday I think he has really declined. That contract isn't worth it anymore. Miller makes the most sense to me, I've really changed my mind on him after watching him play a few more times. But I'd rather just stick with AJ than go and get Watson/Ridnour etc.

Monta Ellis is definetely not gettable. They love him in GSW.
