Should we try to make a French connection?

According to Sam Smith, Seattle is shopping Johan Petro and Mickael Gelabale. While I have little interest in Gelabale, Petro would fit nicely as a 7 footer with shot blocking potential. He's still raw, but he looked good the last time we faced them. He's under contract for next season for 1.9M which makes him one of the few 7 footers that will fit into our financial picture. Realistically to acquire him it would probably take either Salim or Solomon to make the salaries work and a future pick. He was a low 1st rounder who hasn't distinguished yet himself so maybe a 2nd rounder would do it, but they may hold out for more.

Anyone else interested in Johan Petro?

Gelabale showed some good games, mainly last season, but he could be a little too soft, or too slow. Meanwhile, with the playing time of Childress, he could almost have the same stats on pts, reb, stl, ast, TO, with a difference: I don't see him being active under the basket and an energizer like Childress, on the flip side, he has a better 3pts touch (he's not undersized like Stoudamire, and could add one more threat alongside of Joe and Bibby).

I think that both Gelabale and Petro could bring something (more Petro) if Woodson feels it good. I see them playing well with the right systems, but not being at a level where they can play regardless of the coaching choice.

Do you know that Sam Smith has no credibility & just makes up stuff to get attention?

He could even get the Bibby trade predicted - nor the KG, Gasol, or Kidd deals. He knew the last 3 were available because it was common knowledge.

I like how he does a one liners like "Ben Gordon name has come up in trade talks". Really? I'm sure about half the players in the NBA have had their name mentioned in trade talk during the past few weeks

If Sam is your only source, disregard the story

Actually, I do realize that Sam Smith makes stuff. I almost didn't post the suggestion because of it, but I have seen Petro mentioned in couple different places (albeit also weak on credibility like Chad Ford). My interest in the post is to find out if Hawks fans think a raw 7 footer like Petro (he has shown some flashes) is worth our last asset (2010 1st rounder).

The reality is that we don't have any other bullets that it make sense firing (Childress and Zaza create more holes in trading than what we could get for them), but we still have two roster spots that needed filling. We will probably sign from the D-League or waiver wire, but that won't happen until Thursday. Until then I'm scouring for anything that might make help the team, no matter how unsubstantial.

I really have to say that bulls6 is correct on this one, as this really looks like Sam Smith making up a rumor or two again.

The Sonics being fed up with Gelabale and Petro was a rumor before the season started, when it looked like they both didn't really give it their all.

Though, Johan Petro has shown quite some improvement over the last couple of weeks and with the way he's been playing as of late, i don't see the Sonics just throwing him away. He's been really aggressive(Mark Bryant deserves some credit for that) during those last about 10 games and it shows, as he's pulling down boards, blocking shots and scoring some down low, even though his mid range jumper seems to be his bread and butter on offense right now.

All things cosidered, i doubt that the pieces you've got left are what the Sonics would want for Petro, as he looks like a keeper.
Though, Gelabale might be available for a 2nd round pick, even though Sonics head coach PJ Carlesimo told the media that Gelabale will be in the rotation to eveluate him during those last 31 games of the season.

So DET, a 2010 1st rounder and expiring salary is not enough to get Petro?

If so, that's fine. Never hurts to check.

I really don't think so, given the way he's been playing as of late.
Though, it wouldn't be a horrible deal for us.

Remember the story that Sam made up about a month ago - that McGrady is really unhappy in Houston?

If Sam is the ONLY source, you must disregard it
