What we could get from Orlando for Chill and/or Zaza

Post#1 » by Rod700 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:21 pm

I'll put my original post from the Orlando board below, and a response that had promise below it.

ORIGINAL POST:

Hawks fan here. Congrats on the great season you guys have going. At the end of the year we will likely be shopping Zaza and possibly Josh Childress in a sign and trade. I know you guys have been looking for a big man, and I've heard you might be interested in a shooting guard as well. (Even if you don't like Zaza, he would be considered an expiring contract once this season is over.)

I just wanted to see if your team would have any interest in a trade involving those players in the offseason. If so, I wanted to guage what you might be willing to part with talent-wise since we can only speculate at Chill's contract amount as this point. This would involve the complete rebuilding of our bench, so cheap role players and picks are welcome. If you're not interested, that's fine too. No harm, no foul. Just getting some ideas. Best of luck in the playoffs guys.

REPLY BY AN ORLANDO FAN:

If Atlanta matches a max MLE offer, I would be down for sign-and-trading for Childress. Lets say he signs for 7M.

I would do:

JJ (3M)
Bogans (3M)
and whoever we pick with our first (1.5M)

for

Childress (8M)

Granted this is what one guy said he would give for Chill, but no one else shot it down. I absolutely hate to part with Chill, but for the potential of JJ, and a first round pick, I'm very intrigued. How do you guys feel about it? Feel free to fiddle with the trade all you like. I'm sure there are many possibilities.

By the way, how is Bogan's defense?

I also specified we would need to have control over who they selected with that pick and it would need to be a big man.

No responses though guys? I was really hoping that using another board as a think-tank could lead to some productive trades. Granted they aren't the actual front office, but they know more about what Orlando is willing to give than we do.

its sort of ridiculous because FA doesn't happen until after the draft. THere can't be a S&T because I don't think that Childress is even allowed to talk to the magic until after the pick would have already been made.

I was worried people might be hung up on something like that. Couldn't the Magic just select a big knowing that's what we would want to make a Chill trade go through, and because they need another big man anyway? We would of course have to hold off on actually putting the sign and trade together till free agency kicked in. I don't think that's a risk to Orlando to make a pick based on a trade that might not happen since it's the pick they would likely make anyway.

They just address their big man need, and then decide if they would rather have Chill. Our front office would just suggest what we would be looking for in that trade in the offseason. (It's not illegal for front offices to talk to each other about sign and trades ahead of free agency is it?) I'm more than happy to throw in Zaza for a little more from them too, especially since they seem to like him.

Rod- but the point is that Orlando isn't going to take the player the Hawks want until childress agrees to go there. The Hawks can't make Childress sign with the magic. And Childress and the Magic aren't even allowed to talk to each other before the draft.

I understand that. Maybe a better way to put it is this:

If the Magic select a big, would Hawks fans be interested in pursuing this sign and trade when free agency kicks in (if Chill is interested in playing for Orlando at that time)?

. . . and i realize our decision would be affected by which big they select, but I just want to look ahead and speculate.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

it depends on the big. Im sure Lopez, Deandre Jordan, Hibbert, and Thabeet will all be gone by the time the Magic get to him. If its any of those guys I might do it, but if they select another big I dont think so.

Thanks man, that's what I was trying to figure out. What we might be able to get out of Orlando and if it's worth it.
