Any interest in bringing Newble back?

Post#1 » by Rod700 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:50 pm

Sonics just released him. If no one else over pays him, we could use him as a utility perimeter defender if we lose Chill for nothing (as opposed to resigning him or pulling off a sign and trade). Over the three years in which he shot more than 45 threes in a season, he managed to hit 36.3% I wouldn't expect him to score much at all, but maybe he could at least help spread the floor when he's out there.

Not sure exactly how cheap we could get him though. I'd like to bring in Diop first as a role player to stop inside scoring though. Even though Josh Smith is a great shot blocker and we beat the Kings recently, we did it by out scoring them, and they got a lot of easy baskets inside. I'd like to have someone we can put in to watch Smoove's back when the defense gets stretched (or when Smoove is not on the floor) and that sort of scoring gets out of control. Despite my interest in Diop though, I would also look at Ira's perimeter D for super cheap if we end up with room under the luxary tax after the Chill situation is settled.

One more thought. Naturally a playoff team could pick him up immediately, but that could end up being just for the rest of this season.

If he is guaranteed to play for us like he did the last time he played against us (18 pts, 8 reb, 8-12 shooting and 2-3 from 3) then he'd be a great pickup. However, he'd probably play like Ira Newble normally plays against most teams which is decidedly less exciting.

^^^^I agree I think I would only want him if Chill leaves and we have a gaping hole in the bench AND we could get him for less than 2 mil a year. Those are a lot of ifs that probably aren't all going to happen.

^^^Agreed. As I said before, I'd go after Diop first. Even if we don't get him though, the big man situation needs to be taken care of first. I want a defense stopper to compliment Smoove.

I think it would good to get Newble. He's only going to backup the 3 more than likely, but that would be helpful considering we don't have much there. You guys who don't want him are thinking that we need a guy to get 18 off the bench every night, but that's not what we need him for. We just need a solid role player who can hold up a consistent level of play while our starters are resting. Chill brings so much to this team that it would be hard to lose him. Newble can't be as good as him, IMO. But we wouldn't lose much ground and probably would have room to bring in someone decent in a S&T for Chill (like a good big).
