J Chill
The little thing he did in this game is why it very important that we
kep him on this team. I really think him more so than Josh Smith, there is a team that's going to try a pry him away. Teams Know that we are going to keep J Smooth, J chill maybe had.

I what Josh provides to this team, maybe some of you don't, but he makes our bench better, and helps this team on many different levels. On the other hand there are many aspects of his game missing, and I'm not sure if he's ever going to be able to improve on them. He still needs to work on his foot speed, body mass and his defense will improve instantly if he can improve on both of those areas.
I hope we keep him. I really do, but we can replace him, it's just going to be very difficult considering not many "wanted" players around the league want to play for the Hawks. Notice I said the Hawks, not the city of Atlanta, because so many athletes love the city, but there is a lack of respect around the NBA for this team.
Josh is about the only player on our bench I trust at the moment. While we have Acie, he's still learning, and adapting to the game. Josh is our garbage man that every team needs and I hope the ASG has him part of their circus act for a very long time.

Josh is a pretty unique player in the NBA. I just think that we have so many problems that a guy like Chilz could bring in a decent haul. If there was a way to get a of guys like Jack, Diop, and Udoka without giving up Chil than I'd be all for it. Those are the types of guys we need on our bench though. The scoring Chilz gives us is great but we can get the offensive rebounds from other players... if we had a different coach, Al and Smith would be getting those boards instead of taking long jumpers.
Like I said, if we can get our most pressing needs filled (front court depth, a dependable combo off the bench, and a shooter) without giving up Chil, I'm all for it. Otherwise we need to complete the team.
I've said before that I'd be willing to trade Marv too.

Hey, no argument from me. If it were garbage or Chil, I'd take Chil every time.

It's starting to look like Marv needs to go if he can't provide us with more on offense. I'm really looking at this from his lack of 3 point range and when he's due his extension.
Josh is the type of guy that could be here for many years and provide our bench with some much needed depth. Honestly, I can't bare to think about our bench if Josh is moved. I doubt we fill the gaps and improve on it that much during one offseason. If we can't improve our bench we are looking at another below .500 year next season.

LOL you want to let go of Marvin due to his lack of offense and lack of 3 pt range but keep Childress?
Childress can't score for crap unless it is a fast break or a putback and makes one jumper every two games. That doesn't work on a team that needs perimeter shooting. He averages only 12 ppg.
Not to mention he sucks on D.

I think he was factoring in the cost of keeping the player, the potential return on trading the player, and the roll the player fills now. If we had a more consistent catch and shoot player in the starting 5, Chilz contributions would be bigger bonuses (we saw that last night when Marv's midrange J was falling).
If we can get a big return out of Marv, then sure, keep Chil.

Chill shot 49 percent from three 2 years ago and just under 34 percent last year which isn't shabby.
He is having a off year, but he just isn't shooting as many 3's either.
Much like a Bruce Bowen, he is a dangerous three point shooter from the corner.
Chill has been hanging around the rim alot more this season to get offensive rebounds thus he hasn't been out in the corners like he has been the last two years.

Childress has made 83 three pointers in his career. Bowen made 89 just last season.
Childress isn't a threat from anywhere outside 2 feet.

This is a problem. Having him hang out under the rim pushes Smith to the perimeter where he is more likely to launch a jumper from 2 feet inside the 3 point line.
Regardless, Chil's super high 3pt season was an anamoly. He didn't even take a full 3 pointer per game. Other than that, his highest season from that range was 34%. That would be fine if he was still taking them. He's basically forsaken that shot though.
Last night he looked great, he was attacking when he had a mismatch. So was Marv... I don't know if its just easy to play hard against a team like the Knicks or if the guys actually turned a corner.

First of all no GM with half a brain would give up a quality big for Marvin. Secondly if we get rid of Marvin someone else has to defend the 3 spot. Childress can't.
We also would have to find the catch and shoot player you mentioned above to compensate for Childress' shortcomings.

Your comparing two different players and two totally different situations. Your acting as if Josh is a starter on this team, and yet your don't even mention the money side of things.
I'm open to moving Marvin to fulfilling greater needs and since his value is greater. While I love his jumper, he's expendable, and I would prefer a 3 that can fully provide us with our needs. Someone like Corey Maggette (Money issue) would be perfect for us and there are many other options out there. We don't get enough production out of Marvin to fully say he needs to be one of our foundation pieces for the future.
Josh on the other hand is somewhat of a behind the scenes type of player. You talk about him as if he's starting and yet it's not fair. I'm perfectly fine with Josh averaging 12ppg when he only averages just over 7 field goal attempts per game. Let's not get off track here, because he's a role player, and yet he's still a much better rebounder when comparing him to our starting 3.
I don't think anyone has ever said he's a defensive stopper or expects him to be. Every team needs a grinder and he's ours. I view him as the glue that holds our thin bench together and he's the type of guy that is undervalued. I credit Steve Smith for praising Josh so often and giving him his dues.
Marvin's ceiling is obviously much greater. Don't discredit the services Josh brings to this team and act as if the loss won't hurt during both the short and longterm. Seems as if true contenders are the only ones who respect role players like Josh Childress.

He's certainly been a consistent 3 point shooter throughout his career. Live by the 3 or die by the 3 is basically how I look at his situation. It's going to be interesting to see what his does this offseason but he probably accepts his player option.

Wow this paragraph is a train wreck. Where to start?
First of all you aren't a "behind the scenes" player when you play 30 minutes per game.
The reason he averages only 7 attempts per game is that he can't get his jumper off unless the Red Sea parts in front of him.
Better rebounder than marvin? He averages 2.7 defensive rebounds per game compared to Marvins 4.3. Childress beats Marvin on the offensive glass because he never worries about transition D.

I don't expect you to view Josh any differently or change your opinion about him when you have a vendetta against him. Considering the size difference and what Josh is doing on the offensive board he deserves to be mentioned as a better rebounder. I could careless if they're garbage boards or not, they are still rebounds, and they have been very useful to many of our wins this season. IMO, when looking at rebounding numbers it's always best to first look at a player offensive boards and not their defensive boards. You clearly opt to the number that Marvin is beating Josh at so your argument can't have some ground.
How many field goal attempts would you like to see Josh average per night? Your acting as if he's one of our options here. He's a serviceable player that you don't seem to think we need.

I am sorry but that is just plain stupid. Raja bell made more threes in his first year in Phoenix than he did in his entire career.
More is envolved in basketball than you and your fun little stats. Childress's role on this team is different than Bowens, who basically just moves to the other side of the floor from the post up man or enters the post. he doesn't cut, he doesn't rebound, he doesn't drive. He stands there.
Chilldress doesn't take as many threes as other guys and yes, the 49 percent was a anomoly. I think somewhere around about 34-35 would be his number in a offense where they take more three point shots. And 34-35 percent on 3 out of your 3 is a good percentage.
ANd its funny that you would even mention James Jones when he a streak shooter that only hits when he has just as much room as Chill needs.
And you are trying to knock him saying he isn't a behind the scenes player? You do realize that he is right up there with the the best performers in the NBA at the minutes he plays, right? Look at the numbers other 30 minute per game guys are having.

Bibby averages 2.7 defensive rebounds per game for his career. That is the same number of defensive rebounds Childress is getting now. That is pathetic.

That is just dumb.
Horford averages 3 offensive rebuonds per game.
Dwight Howard averages 3.6 offensive rebounds per game.
Camby 3.1.
Al Jefferson 4.0
Horford averages 6.8 defensive rebounds per game
Howard 10.8.
Camby 10.6.
Jefferson 7.6.
Based on your analysis Horford is almost as good on the boards as Camby and Howard. Jefferson is better than both Howard and Camby. That is a joke.
I could careless if they're garbage boards or not, they are still rebounds, and they have been very useful to many of our wins this season.
The problem is that he constantly crashes the offensive boards at the expense of transition D. He is almost always the last guy back on D in transition.
