Could Maggette Return To The Magic?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Mar 18, 2008 10:07 pm

The Orlando Sentinel -
Corey Maggette has the power to opt out of his contract this summer and become a free agent, and returning to the Magic isn't out of the question, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

"We'll sit down this summer and see where it goes," Maggette said last week. "We're not going to the playoffs so we'll have plenty of time to make that decision. My parents will be happy wherever I play."

I would hate to see our division rival acquire some ammo like this!

Even if he opted out Orlando would have to work a S&T because they don't have cap room. In that respect, I don't think they have the pieces to pull off a S&T next year. When they failed to use their expiring contracts to upgrade the roster they restricted themselves to MLE and draft or at least that's what it looked like to me.

My quick Orlando cap breakdown:
They'll have 9 players under contract and be right at the cap. Only Bogans and Foyle will be expiring. Nelson will be BYC. Howard, Lewis, and Turkoglu would be considered off limits in all likelihood. Redick may still have interest around the league, but is only at 2.1M in contract for next season. Cook and Battie have 2 years on their respective deals and add up to approx. 9.5M, but trading them would leave thin on the front line and require more moves. Not to mention it would require someone wanting those players.

They'll probably go big at their pick which should be somewhere around 20-23. They can get a contributor there if they choose wisely, which isn't exactly Otis Smith's m.o.

Also Figure Orlando to try to retain at least one of their 3 free agent Gs possibly 2.
Going to donkey punch a leprechaun!
