Non-Atlanta poster here...i'm just wondering what kind of a number you expect Josh to get this summer as a RFA.

Also, is he untouchable in a sign-and-trade, or is there a number you think is too high for him/a package that you think would make sense?

08-09: $10 mil
09-10: $11 mil
10-11: $12 mil
11-12: $13 mil
12-13: $14 mil
13-14: $15 mil

TOTAL 6 years $75 million

If he was going to be traded, it would make the most sense to trade him for one of the best young C prospects in the NBA and move Horford to PF.

I said Okafor plus the 8th pick or Kaman plus the 6th pick.

Kaman did average 15+ PPG and 12+ RPG this past season... Also one of the top shot blockers in the NBA. Adding in the 6th pick with that wouldn't be a bad trade for the Hawks.

Even a good trade talent wise would probably be a bad trade PR wise. Expect them to just match any offer rather that get tricky.

After that 7 block game along with his great game 2/3 he's gonna get a huge contract like Boris Diaw did for a lesser performance.

Probably close to a max deal, IMO just based on what other people in the league have

Diaw did not get anything near a 75M/6yrs, he got 45M/5yrs while his performance was not so much lesser.
Don't forget he was 24.2pts 8.5rbd 3.2ast 0.7stl and 1.67blk in Western Conference Finals, and 18.7, 6.6, 5.2, 0.9 and 1.1 in all playoffs games, with a very good FG%.

Now, if I was sure that Smith will stop taking all the bad shots, and can stay focused, I will give him max offer. Being not sure at this moment, it would be great if he can be signed for less than a max.

Kaman+8 isn't a bad deal at all but I've said it before, the Clippers have no reason to do that because it leaves them thin at Center and completely stacked at PF.

It is a bad deal.

Kaman had a good year and all, but he only played 56 games. Big numbers don't impress me unless you play most of the year honestly. You will see alot of guys have monster years then look at games played and say "oooohhh. they didn't have a chance to start sucking as usual"

Not that Kaman sucks or anything, but he shoots 48 percent from the field, which just isn't that great for a 7 foot center that scores on the block. Josh in comparison shoots 46 percent(48 if you don't count the first month of the season) and there are complaints about his ability to finish consistancy. Kaman doesn't give you that much better of a rebounder than Horford(2.7 more a game is a big number, but as you see, this is a abberation when you look at his usual numbers), he is a better shotblocker but not a great defender on the pick and roll as horford (which i think is a more useful skill in the NBA...the ability to step out).

A combination of Horford/Kaman simply would not out produce the combination of Smith/Horford on the offensive or defensive side of the ball.

And Okafor...thats just hilarious. We should move our 6'9 PF so that we can get a 6'10 Center because our 6'10 Center is too small to play Center....

I wrote my opus on a Kaman for Smith deal elsewhere on this board but I agree with this statement. My point was that as far as value for Smith, it isn't as bad as what some people on this board would push for.

As you've pointed out though, the only thing Kaman does better than Smith is rebound. He's got a lower BBall IQ too.

Okafor isn't really an option anyway.

#1. It is inside the division and if you are sending away the local hero you want it to be to the other conference to minimize haunting you.

#2. Larry Brown + Josh Smith is a recipe for failure. Given Larry's antics with young players in the past I can just guess what a Josh Smith concentration lapse would result in there. IMO, this combination would ruin Josh's career.

If a C is good enough that we'd really want to deal for, the other team won't want to deal them. We can say it would great to get a franchise C and move Al to PF, but landing a franchise C is hard and expensive. You normally have to take a chance or hope another team gives up on them.

I'd rather bet that another coach can get Josh Smith to play more within himself (or develop his shot to the point that those aren't bad shots anymore) than gamble on a S&T.

I think somebody is going to throw the max at him. Easily. What I'd like to see happen is.....we resign him....package "the" Marvin or Chills for a vet. Perhaps if Dallas will do it I'd like to go after Josh Howard.

well, even as he is, he is better than Marvin and Chills.

If the Hawks will not give him the max then somebody (76ers or Grizzlies) will. Is he for sure worth the max? I don't think so as he has some obvious issues both with his game and his mental make up that he may or may not work through.

I just don't see how the Hawks can take that big of a step backwards if they were to let him walk this summer?

Well I wouldn't do it if I were them but only because of the Brand issue.

On a pure value basis, Kaman came into the NBA at the age Smith is today. He isn't really a more efficient scorer even though he is a center and scores fewer points, he is a good shotblocker but he is a worse defender overall because he loses focus so much, he makes Smith look like Calderon in terms of dumb turnovers...

What he is, is 7 feet and solid on both ends which makes him pretty rare but it is really debatable whether is a better player today and he doesn't have near the upside that Smith does.

Its a horrible deal for us too. bad for them becuse they lose a center and a pick for a PF when they already have Brand.

bad deal for us becuase we get worse in the front court, and have to add another rookie that will have to give major minutes.

both are outperforming him in the playoffs against a better defensive team. He just shot 29 percent for the series with Peja on him. And you know...having parties during the playoffs after a loss...and throwing your teammates under the bus by saying most NBA players smoke weed...essentially saying that the players he is around are smoking weed.

Yeah, screw Josh Howard. I would take Marvin and Chill over him. There is more than just scoring points to keep a team going.

Smith is shooting 50% for the series on 2 point shots and is getting to the line 7 times a game, averaging 18 pts against the DPOY. he is also the primary defender against Garnett who is shooting 8% worse than his season average.

I can't imagine them trading Smith now.
