Baron Davis May Opt Out

Wishful thinking that we would be able to sign him or even work a SNT. I just feel he's the type of 1 that would be perfect for the Atlanta Hawks. We know what he brings every time he steps on the floor and his track record shows he's clutch during the playoffs.

His player option is for $17,180,000

During the 07/08 season Baron played 82 games. Due to his history with injuries, I felt I needed to point that out, because it's not happened since his third season.

Let's start by resigning Smith and maybe Childress, than look at who's available.

Everyone likes Baron, but to get him we'd likely need GS to sign and trade him and involved Bibby, which i'm not sure they would be willing to do.

At this point in time I can't see anyway we can Baron Davis given the financial realities of the league.

Yeah, even if he opts out, the ASG won't step up and give him the money he wants (which will still be much less than his player option).

I'm revisiting this one on the idea of offering Bibby/Marvin in a sign and trade for Baron and Kelenna Azubuike. GSW can let Baron walk and get nothing, but that won't help them stay competitive in the short-term.

The rumored other team with designs on Baron is the Clippers. If they have opt-outs they can trade picks, but Nelson doesn't want to get younger. If not they can offer Mobley and Maggette. I think Bibby/Marvin is competitive to that and frees cap quicker.

I would LOVE a deal like that, it's only a 1 year deal with Baron if he doesn't opt out. But if we had to resign him, I wouldn't want to give him a big deal. He's too risky give a long term expensive contract IMO.

To get Baron, the deal with Baron would have to be at least a 3 year deal, so there is massive risk involved. The only way you are going to get that talent upgrade is to take a risk.

I'm cool with a 3 year contract, that isn't too bad. But a long deal for TONS of money could really screw us.

How so? We are young and we know who our foundation players are for the next ten years (Josh Smith and Al Horford). Baron's an elite point guard that easily improves us.

How does that make any sense? If we move Mike Bibby for a second round pick we most likely miss the playoffs next year. I just don't see how it's wise to even considering moving Mike unless we have plans to acquire TJ Ford or another proven point guard. Acie doesn't appear to be ready at this point and needs another year or two coming off the bench.

Baron may be angling for a 5 year, but he isn't going to get that from anyone at that dollar level. I'm saying 3yrs $55M (17,18,20) is reasonable max dollar compensation. If he pushed for a 5 yr deal I would push for it to be 5yrs $75M by starting at 17M and going down 1M each year. I have no idea what the offer from Golden St was that insulted him. The one thing I know for sure is that you'd have to have him signed to whatever extension could be agreed upon as a condition of the trade. You wouldn't trade for him for a 1 year play out.

Baron would definitely make this team a lot better, but I just don't want to give him a max contract over the next 5 years. It's too risky, before this past season Baron has played less than 50 games in 3 of 5 years, and has only played in barely over 60% of his games in those years.

I don't think Baron makes us a contender, and I also don't see the Spirit willing to go into luxury tax and after resigning Smith we will be VERY close. This would limit us in resigning other players IMO.

I guess if the Spirit are willing to pay up, than I'm all for it, but I don't know that they are and I wouldn't want his contract to make us not resign one of our young players. Plus he takes a lot of dumb shots, he's a career 41% shooter.
