Mike D'Antoni, the dream coach for this roster of young athletes becomes available and you don't even talk to him. Well played once again, fellas. Especially the Gearons, your incompetence is an inspiration to us all.

Not only D'Antoni, but this has been the offseason of some of the best coaches, Avery, Carlisle, Larry Brown. There is also Van Gundy and Mike Fratello out there.
Shame on ASG for keeping Mike Woodson.

The ASG has no reason to give the team to Woody again. BK resigning opens the door to all sorts of possibilities. Whoever becomes the new GM will have the power to choose whether to resign Woody or go a different direction. As far as I feel, they owe nothing to him and should be willing to go with whoever the new GM goes with. If they pick a GM based on keeping Woody around, they will have made a huge mistake. The best thing to do is get the best GM they can and let him find the best coach. There will be pluses and minuses to keeping or letting Woody go, but that will be on him. Personally, I'm ready for a fresh look. I think our players need to learn the NBA from a different perspective in order for them to get better.

As far as D'Antoni, I don't think they've had a chance to really think about who to go after especially when their GM just quit unexpectedly. Perhaps if they can quickly grab a GM, they might be able to find a good coach if they want. At this point and given their track record, I'm not expecting a miraculous set of events.

The ASG are idiots, period. They are good guys, other than Belkin, but have no sense of basketball at all.

Do you all really think he was going to come to Atlanta? He's getting paid $8 million a year and the numbers say that Nash is probably the only reason his system works in the first place.
I expect New York to be picking in the top 10 again next year. I thought there was a chance D'Antonio could have a chance at doing well in Atlanta or Chicago(two teams w/o elite pg's but athletic big men)but he is sure to fail in New York unless they find a team dumb enough to take Curry and/or Randolph. The Knicks don't have the roster to run a successful uptempo offense and they don't have the trade assets(outside of Lee)to revamp their roster in 1 year.

D'Antonio just went from a roster that was full of heart to a roster that's heartless. With all the player options the Knicks have two years from now, the team is still 4 years away from making any positive steps to turning things around, so I expect another lottery days to continue for the 5 years D'Antonio signed for.

I think that's a bad move for D'Antoni. He's clearly just going for the money.
But the ASG needs to hire a GM before they can think about hiring a new coach. Hopefully they will let the new GM pick their own coach which likely means Woody is out the door as he should be. We need to hurry up and get a GM before we lost out on another good coach.

I think D'Antoni should have taken the money but it's funny that there was a "bidding war" for this guy. The Suns sucked the year before they had Nash, suck w/e Nash goes to the bench, and are 4-13 w/o him in the D'Antoni era. If the Suns couldn't play solid basketball with players like Barbosa/Diaw/Marion/Amare/Bell then the chances are that the Knicks are going to suck until they can revamp their roster(which should take atleast half his contract while w/ all those bad contracts)or get lucky and draft a star with their draft pick. That's probably the worst team he could have went to roster wise as they don't have shooters and their front court(Richardson/Randolph/Curry) is the least athletic/most overweight/most overpaid in the league.

Hopefully Avery hold out for us... He'll probably be going to Chicago now though.
edit: or maybe Phx now that they don't have a head coach... and Fratello still wants to coach in a recent interview. So that's 3 teams looking for a coach with 2 good ones available...

^ There was a bidding war for him because he's widely viewed as one of the top 3 coaches in the league, along with Greg Popovich and Phil Jackson.

I would like to know why considering he was a no body before Nash and inherited 3 all-stars along with some of the top role players in the league thanks to Colangelo. What has this guy done to warrant $8 million a year?!

Bidding war because he's a name. You don't get into a bidding war for a coach that doesn't even preach defense and he doesn't even need to be mentioned among the likes of Phil/Greg.

He's a name because he brought 80's fast break ball back to the league. He's a name because he's viewed as a visionary. He's a name because he's viewed as the best offensive mind of his generation. He's a name because his teams average 57 wins a year. And he's a name because he's viewed as one of the 3 or 4 best coaches in the league.
If not for Amare's injury 2 years ago, or the suspensions last year, he might be competing for a 3-peat right now. Guy is a genius.

You can name all the if scenarios you want but that team had no defensive effort whatsoever.
With how undisciplined our young players are that would have been an atrocious fit.
We also don't have the weapons advanced offensively as they had in Phoenix.
Publicly going for a guy that might not have signed with us who really isn't really all that worth it, would have been a bad move

Dantoni is a good coach. But much of his success was due to him being given personnel that worked well in his system.

D'Antoni is Doc Rivers if Doc inherited KG/Allen/Pierce for his first head coaching job. ANY coach would have done well if given the pieces the Suns had. He is an offensive "genius" because he has Steve Nash. The fact is that D'Antoni's system is awful w/o Nash and the Suns have never won a playoff series in which they were the lower seed despite being the "sexy" pick to beat the Spurs in 2005 and this year when once they got Shaq. He will soon join the long list of awful contracts on the Knicks unless Walsh hits the jackpot with his draft pick.
There is NO evidence linking D'Antoni to the Sun's turnaround. NONE.

Wow. You really feel strong about Mike and what he can do. While I like him, I could never give him the credit you have, as he doesn't even have any rings and has had suburb talent on his team. I'm more of a defensive minded person and once again Mike doesn't need to be mentioned with the likes of even the top 5 Coaches.

^ I hear you. I'm more of an offensive minded guy because that's the way I used to play in high school and that's the NBA I grew up loving in the 80's. There's a reason the league has taken a tremendous nose dive in popularity since the 80's, and it all started with Daly, Fratello, and Riley nearly destroying the 80's fast-break ball we all loved. You have to admit, today's game is nowhere NEAR as exciting as 80's ball was. D'Antoni might just bring it back (same with Nelson).
Beyond that - when does this team flourish? When it runs. Our team's biggest weakness is its limited skills. Our biggest strength is our athleticism. A team like that has one chance to compete with the upper echelon teams, and that's by running and gunning. D'Antoni could have brought that to this team.
