This quote from a draft article is exactly why the philosophy BK used to build was flawed... Not that this is new info but it was stated so simply.

I think that BK just failed to realize how much the handchecking rules would affect the game. He thought that just having a bunch of 6-8 and up guys on the floor would be enough to clog the lane because they could use strength to keep people from driving. But now the best wings can get to the lane at will and when every night the other team had the advantage at PG it was just too much to overcome.

I think BK thought he needed the stereotypical small, weak, smart PG to run his offense. At MEM, he traded Bibby for Jason Williams. While with us, he talked about Ridnour and then Calderon. I heard some rumors about Shaun Livingston. All of these were/are prettyboy PGs.

I think he missed the defensive potential of his own "corner the market on 6'9'' players" philosophy. When the length of our defense came into play, we were an exciting defense, often turning stops and steals into fastbreaks A long PG with defensive skills would cap our defense and then lead the break.

That's why I keep squinting at Childress when he plays the point. I can almost imagine ...

One player he easily could have gotten: Rajon Rondo
One player he could possibly have gotten before he started getting any playing time: Tayshaun Prince in the Rasheed trade.

Both are very good defensive players and would fit in any rotation. They just know how to play the game.

One player who didn't come close to achieving his hype: Shellhead

IMO, BK changed my thought of him quite a bit with the Bibby trade, but it also told me he didn't have an idea on how to build a team. He was so wishy-washy with his concept of the 5 types of players that should be out there.
I'm not sure if he truly knew how to select guards. He has been okay with the tweeners (Smoove, Marvin & Chills), but beyond that, we are nowhere near where we could be after 5 years if the 'expert' knew how to create a team. (as weak as the Eastern Division is?)
