Tommy Shepherd from the Wizards (player personel) and Dennis Lindsey (Asst GM from Spurs), according to 790. This is very good news in my book. I don't want anyone with ties to the Hawks.

Good news. I like what the Falcons did getting TD from the Patriots. I think the Hawks should do something similar and get the guy from the Spurs.
Also, when can we expect an announcement on this issue? When BK resignation is complete?

BK's resignation is effective July 1 but i would expect a new GM to be hired long before then. I would certainly expect it to happen this month.

Dennis Lindsey would be my choice over Tommy Shepherd. Dennis Lindsey spent a great deal of time with Houston before leaving for the Spurs a year or two ago. So, it's not like he has much experience with the Spurs, but he still has a great deal of experience with winning organizations.
tontoz, What do you think about Tommy Shepherd?

From the inside...I have not heard those rumors.
They (ASG) have been very hush hush about the entire process. The only peoplein the know are Gearon and the crew. 790 is putting this info out there because they have a "OK" relationship with Gearon. But no one on the inside knows anything yet. S
So for now, that's just a rumor....we will see what happens.

I don't know anything about either guy but i like both.

I too would go with Lindsey.
The Spurs have a great team and all, but their scouting consist of taking the best guy in Europe and drafting him. That isn't exactly rocket science.
They also thought that Leandro Barbosa wasn't keepable and that Oberto was more useful that Luis Scola.

Rip the Spurs didn't think Oberto was better than Scola. They traded Scola so they could also get rid of Jackie Butler which helped them with the luxury tax. That's an owner move not a Popovich/Buford decision. I also don't think that they just take the best European player available. They draft so low every year that it probably makes sense to take a player from Europe because he's going to be underrated due to having to sit out a year. They hit the jackpot on Manu and Parker(although I think he played immediately after being drafted)and I wouldn't be suprised if Splitter(the guy I thought the Hawks should reach for IF they decided to draft Conley) turns out to be a steal as well.
I've been saying for a while that we should probably just fire BK and hire someone from the Pistons or Spurs organization..... who is probably much more qualified to be a GM over some random former all-star player. Hopefully Lindsey is our Kevin Pritchard(another "numbers" guy like Lindsey). I'm pulling for him to win the job although I haven't heard much about the other guy(hopefully he's good too).

I know more about Dennis and feel more comfortable if he's our GM over Tommy Shepherd. While I know a little about Tommy, I just don't feel comfortable about the unknown, and Dennis provides us with some experience. Dennis has been seeking this type of opening so maybe will make a wise decision and pursue him strongly.

I'm actually at the point where I'm going to be mad if Lindsey doesn't get the job. Pritchard got his start with the Spurs and was the mastermind of the Blazers turning the 4th pick and Sebastian Telfair into Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge. Sam Presti has already cleared a ton of capspace for the Sonics and somehow got three 1st round draft picks for Kurt Thomas(this could have been us). Danny Ferry hasn't done a good job but atleast his team is good(although he inherited an elite talent ala Otis Smith). I know Lindsey only spent one year with the Spurs but he seems like he is going to be a very good GM.
why??

why does everyone want Steve Smith as GM or coach? A poll on AJC.com has like 60% of the people wanting him as GM. What has he done to prove worthy of the job? Am i ignorant on something or is everybody wanting to hire this guy based on personality and not his potential as a gm. Because honestly, he hasnt shown me anything that would make me even consider him for coach or GM. I like him but , he just states the obvious.

It's because he was the most recognizable name on the list. He has no experience in the front office and isn't qualified to be a GM. Fans always want a "name" guy even if he has no experience whatsoever and is likely to fail. Evaluating basketball talent has nothing to do with how well you can/could play basketball.

"Permission Granted
The Hawks, sources divulge, received permission from the Spurs to speak to assistant GM Dennis Lindsey about replacing Billy Knight.
Ownership already has talked to Wizards VP Tommy Sheppard. Cavaliers assistant GM Chris Grant, who worked under Stan Kasten and Pete Babcock in Atlanta, is a third nominee. -- New York Post "
