It's Official: Arenas Will Test Market

Gilbert Arenas said he opted out of the final year of his contract with the Washington Wizards by filing the necessary paperwork with the league office Friday. The move makes Arenas, who was scheduled to earn $12.8 million next season, an unrestricted free agent.

Teams will be able to negotiate with free agents July 1.

Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld has repeatedly stated that the team plans to re-sign Arenas and all-star forward Antawn Jamison, who will also be an unrestricted free agent.

Arenas has said that he will seek a maximum-level long-term contract, one that could cover up to six years and be worth more than $120 million. However, Arenas has also said that he would be willing to take less if it helps the team retain Jamison and make other moves to improve.

Looks good for Atlanta if Gilbert doesn't return to Washington. I don't mind Washington getting thinner considering Miami should bounce back from a bad season.

Just for the sake of discussion what would people think of bibby and Marvin for Arenas just from the Hawks perspective? (don't worry about whether washington would accept- thats not really the point)

If you are an unrestricted FA

Does a deal have to be made at this stage? I would think ASG could go out there, offer Arenas a max deal and it is done. You don't have to give up anyone.
We will have to based on salaries, but Washington should get nothing in return. Arenas gave up 12.8!! I bet he gets at least $15-17M/year for his next and probably last contract.
Would I do this? If we could move Bibby/Williams/Childress and get a frontline player from some combination of that group, you bet I would.

Arenas/JJ/Smoove/Horford/?? - That alone should get you in the playoffs

td00- I think the Hawks could offer Arenas the max if they renounced both Childress and Smith. Otherwise they don't have the caproom to make an offer. And if you were talking about a S&T then Washington would have to accept the trade which is why I asked the question.

I'm not the biggest Arenas fan but

Arenas/Joe/Player/Smith/Al

is a really nasty lineup, Arenas has the same floor spacing effect that Bibby has but he also has the ability to create his own offense in the half court. He's probably similar in his ability to push the pace, and while he's a bad defender in his own right, he isn't worse than Bibby.

That would put a lot of pressure on Josh/Al/Woody to come up with ways to get our bigs involved in the offense off the ball in the half court.

Atlanta will not be able to cough up the money it would take to get Gilbert Arenas. Honestly the only team that does is the Washington Wizards.

i don't think it is a smart move for him to leave $12.8 million on the table after missing the season due to injury. Who is going to pay him more than that?

I don't see anyone offering him a max deal. Then again i thought the same thing about Rashard so whatever.

I don't think he cares about making more than 12.8 a year- its the guaranteed years that matter. And I would think that more than ever coming off a season where he got injured it has to make him very aware of the benefit of having a long term guaranteed contract. He is just setting up the PR of "See- I TOLD you I would take less money if thats whats best for the team!"

Yeah that is probably it.

I think the Wizards are in position to play hardball with him.

What about LA?

Does anyone not think that he could easily go to one of the LA teams?

Yes, he has a big number, but the Lakers have always seemed to find room for big time players. Him going to the Clippers should not be overlooked. He has stated he likes the West Coast.

There will be a few suitors for his servers. Are Cleveland or NJ potential suitors for GA?

Arenas is another guy that gets steals so people think he is a good defender.

That line up would be ugly perimeter defensively. Smoove and Horford would have 2 fouls within minutes of the first quarter (thus not playing again until the second half).

Well this is a problem regardless of who we have on the perimeter. We need a backup big man who can play a little D, right now it is Marv who is woefully overmatched on D as a PF, and Zaza who is basically worthless on that end.

On the perimeter we have a guy who could be a good defensive backup but we don't use him ever. We play Chil against elite SGs and PGs who basically tear him to shreds.

it baffles me how people on this board continually say "No" to even the thought of acquiring players who have had more team and individual success than anybody on our roster. How do you all expect to take the next step?

Well, for me, its not just about adding a guy that is good. That is video game team building. Its about building a team that can win because the pieces fit.

A team with Bibby at the point, Arenas at the 2 and Joe at the three wouldn't win. Simple as that. We would get more talent, no doubt, but that talent wouldn't particularly mesh.

I have said it before and say it again, sometimes, to make a better team, you need to trade down in overall talent. I think Marvin Williams is a better player than Mike Miller, but I think Mike would help the team more.

I think that Gilbert Arenas is a better player than Michael Redd, but I would go after Redd if it was about making the team better. Its all about who fits.

What do you mean that team wouldn't win? Are you serious? That team in the east would be just fine. So your saying our team as constructed would win more than that team? I disagree.

How are we going to sign Smith and Arenas at the same time again?? And what exactly would your plans be for the bench?

Oh, and it's Horford not Hortford. It ticks me off when people do that. :banghead:
