All are UFA with the exception of Morris. I would take any 3 of these and consider it a successful improvement to our bench.
Probably Brown, Barnes, Pietrus & Dooling have the potential to start a few games.

Roger Mason Jr. is a player who would be a good fit off the bench and I don't think Washington is going to be able to keep him if they re-sign both Jamison and Arenas.

Jarvis Hayes and Theo Ratliff. I think both could do some beneficial things for the hawks.

Did Patrick O'Bryant ever show any potential? I always wondered about him. I think the most he played last year was 12 minutes.

He's 21 years old though...perhaps another Zaza in the making???

We got to get someone to back up JJ. A player who can give us 10-20 min a night, since we can move JJ to SF for a few min. Then we should address our C position. I doubt we can get Ratlif. He seems to draw interest from many teams, specially contenders. R. mason can shoot, no doubt, but what about Abuzike (GS) or whatever his name is ? Is he more of a SF or SG ? Mikael Pietrus is another option, but he's more of a SF, isn't he ?

i would be happy if we got one or two of them.

1. I still want David Andersen to come over. I think he's the most skilled player we can add without a trade given cap rules.
2. I make a pitch to Alonzo Mourning just in case he'll do his last year or 2 here as backup C and to teach our guys how to be mean.
3. Kelenna Azubuike 24 yr old SG 38.3% career from 3pt range
4. Walter Hermann 29 yrd old SF 40.8% career from 3pt range, but coming off a bad season as he struggled to get PT

Patrick O'Bryant actually has impressive per minute block numbers, but it such a small sample it is hard to evaluate and project from. Even if we signed him would Woodson give him any PT?

Desagna Diop and Kwame Brown are my distant fall back plans for backup C. I suspect the role will require a trade to fill.

My thoughts are we need:
a bench go-to scorer
a defensive backup C
3 pt shooting to stretch the court

As much as I know that we need a 3rd PG I am afraid to give Woodson any excuse not to play Law. We need to know whether Law can do it on the floor. We need to know that prior to the trade deadline. Given Woodson's past tendencies a vet PG even at the minimum (especially one that Woodson has experience with) would steal too many minutes.

If we can sign quality backups at SG/SF, then I think it liberates us to trade Marvin or do a sign and trade with Childress. Only one of the two should be signed long term given the economic realities of the cap. If you sign both to slightly better than the MLE they add up to a max player salary-wise without true max player impact.

Good call on Azubuike, Evil. I think he is going to have a long career.

I'm also with hoopsguru on Roger Mason Jr. He's a very good shooter and can really help our depth at both PG and SG.

I would like to see Kwame Brown, Patrick O'Bryant or Randolph Morris added because they should be cheaper than Diop and it will allow us to sign another shooter(Jeremy may be this guy though). We may not need a 3rd point guard if Speedy can come back healthy but if he can't I would like to see AJ brought back.

There are some serviceable players that we could really use on our bench. Kelenna Azubuike from the Warriors opted out of his contract which it may be very difficult for GS to keep him. I'm not going to get my hopes up.

I think Azubuike is similar to Ime Udoka, just getting there while being 6 years younger. I would have loved to sign Udoka last year, but San Antonio nabbed him for 2yrs/2M. We may have to pay more than one of the more established powers to win the services of a swingman who can d up on the perimeter and stroke the 3 like Azubuike. I'm thinking the 2M range using about half the MLE (which can be split).

After taken a shot to Kwame, the next step would be IMO

I'm intrigued by James Jones as wing option, regardless of whether Childress gets re-signed. Hits threes but doesn't appear to be a defensive liability, and seems to be a good locker room presence.

At worst, he'd sustain the Hawks' propensity to acquire players whose surnames make them hard to find in the phone book (Smiths, Williams, Johnsons, Jones)

Hopefully he'll opt-out next week and will be interested in coming back East...

Keleena would be a huge get for the Hawks. It would not cost too much to bring him in. You just have to get on him early. He has a very good offensive game and his defense is good as well.

But if you just plan on putting him behind JJ, you are going to waste his signing, because Woody would not be taking JJ's minutes of 35+ away from him. Keleena would no doubt look for a team that could give him 20-25 mpg.

You can play Kelenna and JJ together. Joe can play any of the 3 perimeter positions.

The concern would be committing decent money to another wing when we are spending $25m or so on Joe, Marv, and Chil.

That sounds like Billy Knight.

Just because Joe can play them doesn't mean he wants too. I don't see it being an option for Joe if he's going to be playing outside the 2 for many minutes. I'd love for us to pursue Kelenna.

Joe plays some pretty effective minutes at the point so long as he's not there for too long. Its one thing to be BK and say that you need a group of completely interchangeable players but its just silly not to exploit certain matchups when they are given to you. As far as playing him at the 2 or the 3, a lot of times he's guarding a 3 and a lot of times he's being guarded by a 3... like the 4 and the 5 in the NBA there isn't always a difference.

We seem him play outside of the 2, but I just don't see him being as comfortable with it as so believe, so as long as it's not for too like (like we both seem to agree) I don't see an issue with it. Kelenna can even play both 2/3 for us. I'd love to have another 3 point option for us coming off the bench. I can see playing Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson and Kelenna together sparking our offense.
