Roy Hibbert's draft stock

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sun Jun 22, 2008 3:54 pm

Falling star
On Georgetown center Roy Hibbert's draft stock, one NBA scout said, "Hibbert is going to need a parachute on draft day. The young centers have passed him in the eyes of teams. His stock is just plummeting, when last year he could have been a top-10 pick. Guys were able to really get a good look at him last season, and more questions were answered by his performance last year." The scout also said the 7-foot-2-inch, 278-pounder, an Associated Press second-team All-America selection, would likely be available when the Celtics pick 30th. Keep in mind that Doc Rivers knows Hibbert very well, since his son, Jeremiah, played at Georgetown the past two seasons before transferring to Indiana.

I'd still take Roy and allow him time to develop over some of our other bench players. The thing is, what are the chances the ASG actually buys into the draft?

If Hibbert falls to the end of the first round or the top of the second round the ASG needs to buy a pick so we can draft him.

What's weird is that most scouting takes on him project him as able to contribute at the next level immediately. They acknowledge that he won't be a run the floor big or develop into a superstar. What are you expecting if you pick a guy out of the top 20? If you get a true big (7-2) that can play 20 minutes and contribute for that low of a pick then why not do it? Not every move is about getting a superstar, some times you are just filling a roster spot and getting certain skills and minutes filled.

I'm really not convinced Hibbert is better than O'Bryant.

I would have gladly spent a pick in the 20s on O'Bryant as well. The advantage of the draft is if the player is available you acquire the pick and you get his rights. O'Bryant is an unrestricted free agent. You have to compete with other interested teams in terms of salaries and guarantees to get him on board. If you wait for free agency then you don't have much in fall back options if you get outbid.

That's strange because all of the sources I've read say that Hibbert is having great workouts.
His stock is rising and he probably won't make it past Sacramento at #12.

I think Hibbert should be nothing more than a second round center. He's really not that special, and I knew as soon as I saw him two years ago that he would not be top 10 draft material like people were saying he'd be. He's certainly got a lot to prove after his very disappointing playoff performance. Personally, I don't know what's so special about him. I wouldn't want the ASG wasting money on this kid.

I highly doubt it. Hibbert will be lucky to be drafted within the Top 20 pick, but I think he'll drop to Top 30.

Looks like Utah likes him.

I doubt the ASG plans on buying into the draft and I understand due to the amount of checks they'll write this offseason (Joshes). I just wish we could get our hands on a center and allow him time to develop.

More proof that spending more time playing college ball doesn't always help.

I'm not the biggest Hibbert fan but he's no worse than Brook Lopez. They're both slow but long with good skills.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.
