Hawks GM will play waiting game on draft night

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jun 24, 2008 4:50 am

“You’ve got five players out of the equation, and of the other five or six, two of them are Al Horford and Joe Johnson — you’re not going to trade those,” Sund says. “You don’t say you can never make a deal — nobody’s untouchable — [but] it’s very unlikely.”

And that’s OK. For the first time this millennium, the Hawks are good enough to win. (That’s provided Smith and Childress are re-signed, which seems probable no matter how much they’re offered elsewhere.) There are no longer any glaring holes on the roster, a truth Sund underscores by saying, “There’s a pretty good chance we’re going to have three spots — nine, 10 and 11 — open, and we’ve got to be able to say, ‘Who out there as No. 61, 62, 63 [the best undrafted players] would look at the Hawks as a good place to come?’ “

Most new GMs arrive with a mandate to change. Not Sund. Ridiculed though he was, Knight nonetheless built a core capable of pushing the Boston Celtics to a Game 7, which was more than Joe Dumars and Kupchak could do. Knight’s failing was that he didn’t usually take the right guy; his strength was that, with the exception of Shelden Williams, he didn’t pick any duds.

Rick Sund is a very boring and conservative GM. By the looks of it....this season is going to be a huge disappointment unless Horford and/or Marvin take big steps in their games because it doesn't sound like we're going to improve our weaknesses by trades/free agency.

The article acknowledges that our options to trade for a pick are limited. Bibby, Marvin, Zaza, and Solomon are it. Unless we are picking up players and a pick (I still like my Zaza to Seattle deal) nothing will happen. It also seems apparent that we won't be buying a pick because we will be using every dollar for resigning the Joshes. I find it humorous that Sund mentions finding undrafted gems because Woodson wouldn't play any of them anyway.

When you have both Sund and Woodson talking about bringing in players to complement the first 8, what realistically will these guys do? They sound content on starting the year with what we finished with last year. One playoff series doesn't solidify a rotation, but it appears that is what this is.
Now, I know we aren't going to be told anything, but here we are again going through a very listless offseason watching the Woody drama drag out and now the Joshes getting contract offers only after someone else offers. This kind of management sounds more reactive than proactive.
I didn't know what to expect with Sund and his long NBA tenure, but it appears he doesn't like to take too many chances with the roster.
I do remember Woody saying that we were okay talent wise, and that was probably pre-Bibby, so i will give Bibby the benefit in that we will see a more consistent team this year. The Boston series was what has put us in this spot, and I don't agree with how we are entering the season. I know Sund doesn't want to make too many waves, or is being told to stay at the cap limit, but we have a lot of ground to gain to have any kind of advantage if we were to try and land a homecourt series in the playoffs.

We will just have to be content with looking for players 9,10 & 11 to fill out a roster and wait to see how long before Woody has no confidence in them.
One guarantee; we will not be getting a veteran difference maker this year at those positions.
The ones we have brought in have been here to extend their tenure in the NBA because this has usually been their last stop before leaving the league.

I don't think getting another young guy will solidify our rotation. We need to use our money wisely this summer, and lock up a nice vet role player.
