5 years and $72.5 million for this guy?!? Please somebody tell me if I'm missing something. I really hope this doesn't drive up the price of Josh Smith.

apparently the deal is $60 million plus incentives that if met can bring the deal to $70 million.

Bogut sure looked like an All-Star against us.

He's a 14/10 guy with a lot of size. I'm guessing he and Okafor will get similar paydays. I don't think it's unreasonable, young centers come with a big price tag, he is still only 23.

Okafor still has health issues that I have to believe lower his ultimate price tag.

Any C who can get almost 10 boards a game basically gets $10M or more per year. Kaman got $50 before last season. Dalembert is getting over $10/season. Nene got freaking $10M before even doing anything. I think a deal of 12M-13M per year would have been more reasonable for him, but it doesn't shock me he got about $15M per.

By the way, Horford is basically going to get the max when he's a FA. Hope ASG is ready to spend some $$$.

I think the ball is in the Clippers court on Josh Smith. They basically have to choose between throwing max type money at Okafor or Smith. They already have Kaman, so it does worry me a little bit. I don't think they can pursue both because teams have 10 days to match and it locks up the cap space until the other team makes a move.

The Bucks did what was needed to keep him and Bogut continues to improve. He's becoming a better shot blocker and he's learning how to get to the foul line more which he's needed to improve on since his rookie season.

To touch on the Emeka Okafor situation:

He was healthy this past season playing all 82 games and that's all that matters. He deserves a similar contract to the one Bogut just signed and he's most likely going to get more. I hope the Clippers lure him from Charlotte instead of focusing on Josh Smith.

I don't see why the clippers really care about the 7 day waiting period- no one else has major caproom, any free agents left have incentive to see if they will come out of the offersheet with max room to offer.

I agree with everything you said except Horford is a lock to get the max.

Big guys who can average 10/10 will almost always get around $10 million a year. Even people like Darko and Kwame who haven't proven anything got over the MLE for doing nothing on their rookie contracts. Eric Dampier underachieved his whole career and got paid big money after putting up 13/13 in a contract yet. I'm not sure what the incentives are...5/60 is a decent deal and probably what we should have offered Smith last year. 5/72 is pretty questionable considering they are bidding against themselves. You never want to rush into overpaying someone when he isn't on the market yet. I think he could prove to be worth it though. If he is putting up 18/10 next year than the contract is justified because he'd probably ask for the max and find a team willing to give it to him. The same can be said for Bynum in L.A. but I'm not sure the Lakers are worried about someone outbidding them.

Its funny how the reaction to the deal changes based on who reports it. The agent reports it as a 5 year 72 million dollar deal, but the Agent wants to make it sound as good for his client as possible so he announces it so that every possible incentive is included. If Bogut hits every single incentive then he is almost certainly going to be worth 72 Million. The base deal is 5 years and 60 Million and I would have been rather surprised if he signed for anything less than that.

It would depend on what the incentives were. Marcus Camby gets more money just for not missing a certain amount of games. Larry Hughes got more money for the team winning a certain amount of games despite being awful.

Add in the fact that it is a flat $12m a year which might slightly overpay him to start off but in 6 years time in the last year of that deal ,even if he doesn't improve from this years performance that will be a bargain.

Things the Bogut contract does do:

1) This will drive up the price to get Smoove away from the Hawks. The Clippers have cleared more space now, and they have to choose between Smoove and Ofkafor. If they want to make a marketing splash, they bring in Smoove. For strictly basketball skills, its Okafor.

2) Look for big men to continue to get big money for little production. I always thought Dalembert was overpaid and his length of contract was a concern at that time as well. Golden State is still paying the enigma Adonal Foyle. I still see Kwame getting good $$ for being a lifetime mid-achiever.

3) Marvin Williams has to be smiling because he was considered the most talented in the Bogut draft. Look for his agent to try and get the max.

4) The ASG will struggle to sign a big man FA based on cost.

marvin is the guy most likely to get traded next year. i don't see us signing him this year, and we aren't as likely to match a contract as we are with the joshes.

of course he could blow up into a 20 a night scorer and change everything.

He can make 20 a night and still not have teams knocking at his door. He needs to become a 3 point threat and balance out the rest of his game. For our sake he needs to do this so we can get more value for him if he's not going to be part of our future.

No way Marvin comes anywhere near a max deal. Personally, I wouldn't resign him for the midlevel exception

I think he is going to get 5 years and 50 million from some desperate team

you're a fool for not signing him for the midlevel, but he isn't a max guy either. he's on par with childress in that he's a role player who shouldn't have the game rest on his shoulder. with that being said another year's worth of improvement (i think he is going to be alot better this year) and he can get a good sized contract next year in restricted free agency. but nobody should be trying to break the bank on him. 6-8 is a good price for him and i wouldn't be surprised if he got 9-10 because someone uses the potential card one last time and overpays.
