Let me start by aying I WANT JOSH SMITH HERE, but if we have to grossly overpay to keep him wuld it it be better in the long run to save that money put Al a PF and maybe get a shot blocking center.
There would be a lot of unhappy fan if we let him walk, to pay 13mill a year would hurt getting more help and if we don't get better I think we will ave a hard time keeping Joe. even if we could get Al thorton and a first.

it's going to cost the same amount to get a center that's not as good as smith than it would to keep him. i know that al shouldn't be at center, but we shouldn't make the team worse just to put him at a different position.

We need to keep Al and Josh. It's that simple.

I hope so, If we do keep both the joshes I just hope Accie can push bibby so we can trade him at the trade deadline. And get sup help. Also I still would love to have Hasheem Thabeet on this team

I'm not sure if this is really "Al Horford Option", but yeah this is the debate.

If we let Smith walk we have to replace his defense which would mean we need a shotblocking center like Thabeet/Pryz/Diop/Dalembert. Except no one outside of Joe on this roster is an elite offensive player, what gets us by is our balance. Smith happens to be the second best player at creating his own shot and the player who gets, by far, the most points in the painted area and we'd certainly be hurt by swapping him out with an offensively limited player. Smith also plays on the perimeter to allow Childress to play inside, if we added a center with some offense like Kaman, Childress has to play out on the perimeter to allow Al and Kaman to play inside which reduces his effectiveness to almost nothing.

Making up for what we lose by letting Smith walk is more than just "a shotblocking center"; geeman, that isn't direct at you as I understand you think we'd be a lot worse off without Smith.

I've said it before and here I'm again. If J. Smith receives anything over $11M , you must consider a S&T. Pair Horford with Kaman or Bogut for example, I mean, I do not get to when people say that we got to keep this guy no matter what. There are plenty of options out there. We do not want to have a kirilenko type of guy here. At a resonable price, I'd keep him, otherwise we should look at our options. As good as most of you guys think he is, not even 1 team has come up with big money o get him. That should tell you something.

No one has come up with any money for Deng, Smith, Childress, Biedrins, Okafor, Ellis, or Iggy...

Regardless, the ball just isn't in our court. If he, or his agents, think that the Clippers will offer him the max than they have no reason to negotiate anything lower because if they sign him to that offer sheet, he will get that amount of money from someone.

Re: Bogut or Kaman. Two things, Bogut just signed his own contract and the Clippers have no reason to SnT Kaman if they think Atlanta is willing to let Smith walk, they have enough money to just offer it to him.

Its not that we should keep him no matter what, no one here thinks he is on the same level as Tim Duncan or something. Its just that the consequences of letting him walk for nothing are potentially disastrous because we don't have the resources to replace him, our other top player has been complaining for years about not getting enough help and letting a guy like Smith go doesn't really help that situation, and when you pull a stunt like letting one of your top players walk (at age 22) other teams start to see you as a mark and players don't want to come because they don't think management will pay to win.

A SnT is a good option if Smith doesn't recieve an offer from the Clippers or it looks like it won't be a max offer and Smith's reps know that we would match it. We just don't know what the Clippers are doing yet.

you make it sound like those are easy to come by.... anyway, Josh, Al, and Joe have nothing to worry about.... Marvin, and Chil, and Bibby are the ones that have to worry.

This is why we should look to S&T Childress. We need shooters. With Childress on the roster, he will get ~30 minutes regardless and we will continue to have the same problems that hindered us this season. Childress is a tough player to fit into a team, just read your above quote, that's not a good thing, at all. It is an absolute MUST that we get shooters, every top team has at least 2 3pt guys on the floor at all times. We have Joe. Bibby will be here this season but is likely gone afterwards, Law is supposed to be our future PG and he's also not a shooter. You must have players with range to open up the floor. Just look how much better JJ and our offense as a whole got when we added Bibby. He opened up the floor even if he wasn't hitting his shots.

Marvin also must add a 3pt shot, there is no reason for him to shoot one foot inside the line and not back up a little. Marvin has added nothing to his game in his tenure here and he needs to. If he can't add a 3pt shot, trade him also.

Well put on shot blocking C's. They hard to find and you have to overpay them in free agency.

I believe Bibby's fate long term really comes down to the size of contract he's willing to sign for. If he'll take the MLE I believe the team would re-ink him for 3 years. Anything more at this advanced age is a recipe for a bad cap situation. Childress I think will be here at an MLE level because that all the market will bear for him. The teams that can bid more want to use their cap room for a bigger splash in free agency (Clippers) or trade (Warriors) or don't intend to spend at all (Grizzlies). Marvin I think is here for 2 years tops. If he adds the 3 point shot to his game like he needs to then he'll get offers that Atlanta will be unwilling to match because his all around game isn't anywhere near max level. If he doesn't then his qualifying offer is probably greater than the offer he'd get on the open market. I would expect him to jump at the QO and gain his freedom and another year to develop his game looking for a big payday.

These are just my opinions. If we lose Josh Smith this off-season, I would guess the willingness to sign Marvin at a market rate next year might go up. It's just at that point in time I will probably have ceased to care.

I agree, unless we can count on Acie and/or Marv developing outside shots or get a big man with some range in here, Childress is always going to be filling a role we don't need filled. His lack of perimeter D makes that problem a deal breaker to me.
