Should we be targeting J.R. Smith like OKC?

I know that Denver is probably going to match any offer, even if it takes them into the luxary tax, but would it really hurt to make an offer at this point? With a S&T for Smith possibly underway, that won't return equal value, landing someone like J.R. Smith could be pivotal for the team's future. I worry the situation with Smoove is commanding all our attention, when we could be taking a shot at stealing a great talent. Denver will likely match, but why not take a shot?

One question: Since Smoove's contract counts against the cap as long as we retain his rights, does that mean that we would have to use the MLE to sign J.R. even if we were to sign him before Smoove?

I'm pretty sure the Hornets would have to trade for Smith considering they already signed Posey. I also don't think the Hawks can offer the full MLE anymore(although I'm not sure)since we signed Evans.

The Hawks can only use whatever they have left of the MLE in order to sign Smith. Denver would do cartwheels if that happened.

i would much rather have JR than Evans, but the Hawks already signed Evans and Morris. the only thing that is left is the Smith situation, besides that, i think the Hawks are pretty much done with signing anybody else over the MLE.
