Olympic Basketball

Post#1 » by evildallas » Sun Aug 10, 2008 10:24 am

Thought I'd try to start it off.

Day 1 - The US will be playing China later today. I'm interested to see how the crowd reacts and the officiating.

Lithuania is rocking Argentina by double figures (although time is left for a comeback). Argentina is playing too much one on one. Could that be the NBA influence?

Spain throttled Greece. Didn't get to see that one, but the box score has Pau Gasol coming off the bench. Didn't see that coming.

Now the Lithuania/Argentina game is becoming a duel between Ginobili and Kleiza.

Update - Argentina is coming back (7 straight points to cut it to 4) and Lithuania is feeling the pressure. Why is the ESPN scoreboard delayed about 2 hours?

Argentina tied it, but Kleiza nailed a 3 pointer with 2 seconds on the clock. Big win by Lithuania.

NBC has updated box scores. You have to click on "scheduled" under results across from team names to get the box score.

Craig Sager is doing sideline reporting, but he isn't in one of his trademark suits. Guess they had him tone it down so as not to scare the local fans.

Anybody can play on Spain they have really a deep team. I know the coach and he is going to split the minutes a lot and nobody is going to play more than 30 minutes. I has not importance that Gasol was coming off the bench, next game he will start, he is the star of the team

I hear you. I realized how deep they were as I looked at the box score and recognized almost every player (I admit I don't know Berni Rodriguez). Even if it was just for the first game, the ability to bring Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro off the bench shows a lot. It's not like Greece is a cupcake. I suspect they have a chip on their shoulder after Athens as well.

Croatia plasters Australia. They ate them alive from 3 point range. 12 of 15 from 3. Ouch. David Andersen was a non-factor.

The online feed was actually pretty good quality. No skipping.

First half was good for USA. It's time to put the hammer down during the second half and put this game a way.

I'm happy to see Yao Ming playing well even though he's not 100%. It shows the heart he has to still make it to these games and how much he loves his country.

Strong game by the USA. China did hit a lot of 3s, but the USA D really set the tone.

I hate that Comcast didn't pick up the Olympic Basketball Channel. I'll be watching some games online instead.

Nice performance from our boys today. I felt that we played better against China then any of the tuneups. China was lights out early from outside, but we kept plugging away and the superior talent, quality, and depth began to show towards the end of the first half.

Most of the games are on USA Network with the exception of Spain which will be on NBC.

Not exactly Olympics, but I found an interview with Craig Sager from the Olympics.

link here

He really doesn't like the outfit that they make him wear for this. It's a good read and accurate Craig Sager given how he was when I met him while he was not working. It's not an act. Craig Sager is a party animal. And since he spoke so highly of the Red Foxes, I had to find their site.

Evil, you said most of the games are on USA. But the only one I can find that isn't USA is Spain-China? I'll have the online feed on for that 9PM matchup between Iran and Lithuania.

I know we always kill Angola, but they are a straight up dynasty in Africa. They've been in every olympics that I can remember and have won the African Championships 8 of the last 9 times.

Sorry, I meant most of the USA games are on USA Network at 8am ATL Time with the exception of Spain-USA (NBC Sat 10:15am). The other games I can't really comment on because I've found the Comcast listings a bit inaccurate. Spain-China was listed under MSNBC for 5:45am Tuesday morning. The Angola, Greece, and Germany games are 8am USA network games on the 12th, 14th, and 18th respectively.

Most of the non-USA games have to be caught online since Comcast didn't add the 2 speciality channels. If you have a decent net connection it isn't bad (no announcers). It appears that NBC has placed enough server power and bandwidth to make the net broadcasts tolerable.

Finally found a link that has the info

Although i'm not sure what's with the 2am-noon time though... I thought it usually starts at 8am...

EDIT - Didn't realize it would roll to a new page. So I pasted the other link in too.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/basketball/schedule/television/2008-08-12;_ylt=Al6lR6SS8RKvdISMJQuS6_dtaJh4

Cool if you combine that link with this one:
http://www.nbcolympics.com/basketball/resultsandschedules/gender=M/index.html

You can figure out what channel might have a game on and exactly when to look. You can configure it to use Beijing time or your local time. Looks like I'll have to check out Germany-Greece online though as it should be starting soon.

Greece has handled Germany pretty easy. I expected better from Germany, but they really didn't play good D.

China had a big lead on Spain, but couldn't hold on. Spain took it in overtime. Spain's D down the stretch was real pesky. Other observations: They let a lot of contact go underneath and Yi Jianlin played horribly.

Yi looks AWFUL. Good thing we didn't draft that guy. I felt bad for China, they have played so hard the first two games and have nothing to show for it.

Easy win today against Angola for the USA. Greece will be a stiffer test. That's going to be an interesting morning for me, I'll be up to see USA Soccer trying to get into the medal round at 5AM and then basketball going for revenge against the Greeks at 8.

Argentina thumped Australia. Patrick Mills put up 22 in a loss. David Anderson scored 10. Bogut had a bad outing. Too much fire power on Argentina. Might be hard for Australia to make the medal round.
