New depth chart ?

Post#1 » by tbhawksfan » Tue Aug 19, 2008 1:43 pm

With Smoove and Marvin filling in, could we be looking at;

Horford / Zaza / Morris

Smoove / Marvin / Jones

Evans / Hunter

JJ / Flip / Richardson

Bibby / Law / Speedy

Marvin or Smoove can probably swing to the SF, but 245/250 and 6'9" looks like a PF. Even with the youngsters bulking up, we still need a big, banging C to complement this rotation.

Marvin played SF all season for us but he does look - on paper - somewhat like a PF. However, he needs a lot more strength before he can actually start there.

You can use ink to write Marvin's name in at SF.

I think that Marvin might eventually end up at PF but for this season on teh hawks he is pretty clearly the starting SF who will occasionally play some PF in small lineups.

C-Al Horford/Zaza Pachulia/Randolph Morris
PF-Josh Smith/Solomon Jones/Othello Hunter
SF-Marvin Williams/Mo Evans/Mario West
SG-Joe Johnson/Flip Murray/Thomas Gardner
PG-Mike Bibby/Acie Law/Speedy Claxton

That is the full 15-man roster I expect and the basic depth chart. Only 12 players can be active for a game. I see Hunter and Solomon battling it out for playing time in practice. West or Gardner will likely see time if Speedy is hurt or needs time off to rest his knees. Just like with Hunter and Solomon. West and Gardner will be battling for playing time in practice.

^^^That's about right. I would like to say J-Rich in there instead of Gardener though.

On paper I agree... though I think Evans will see time at the 2, and Murray could see time at the 1... in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see Murray getting most of his minutes at the 1, Evans at the 3, and the two of them fighting over the leftover minutes from JJ (all 8 or so per game). In this scenario Law gets screwed by Woody's dislike for youngsters and/or continues to not show much on the court.

You got Smoove and Horford on the frontline to play PF. I don't see Marvin getting any minutes on the blocks. The question is can we get some positive results from Zaza/Morris to match them with Horford and possibly see Smoove play a few minutes at the 3. I see that as more likely.

Marvin has a lot to work on to show his talent is as good as the 2 Olympians we didn't select.

Marvin played quite a few minutes at PF last season because our best backup usually came in at his position and we had no dependable frontcourt depth. Hopefully we have enough backcourt depth to fill in the minutes that Smith is out with a big that can rebound and I doubt that Evans plays 30mpg a game like Chill. Any extra minutes we get out of Flip or Acie at the guard spots should be used to give Joe a break and keep Bibby from breaking down.

But yeah, Hawks looks about right but I wouldn't be suprised if Othello passes Solo based on the fact that he seems to be less of a project.

I read somewhere that the Hawks plan to start Horford at PF this season. That makes Zaza and Randolph Morris potential starters.
