Training Camp Invitee: Frank Robinson

Post#1 » by lethalweapon3 » Wed Sep 17, 2008 10:49 pm

If the CSU Fullerton guard is as aggressive with his defense as his eponym was at the plate, he'll be a worthy camp contributor and a future NBA prospect. He's charting the early path of his taller fellow Titan alum, Bruce Bowen.

Frank Robinson, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year, has been invited to the Atlanta Hawks training camp after working out with the team during the offseason. The 6’4 guard has been invited to the camp as an undrafted rookie and will compete to make the 15-man roster in October. The Hawks have 14 players signed to contracts with Jeremy Richardson and Mario West still unsigned by the team.

“I’ve been saying since last April that I’ll be playing for the Hawks, so it’s getting kind of strange that it’s coming true.” Robinson said. “So many doors have closed along the way, but everything is working out now.”

Robinson caught on with the Hawks after working out with the Memphis Grizzlies, Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers earlier in the summer. “Frank’s athleticism, competitiveness and character is what first caught the eyes of our scouts. His physical abilities are obvious, but I think the intangibles he possesses will give him the opportunity to play in the NBA one day,” Hawks’ Assistant General Manager David Pendergraft said in an e-mail. “He didn’t get to play as much as he had hoped during our summer league in Salt Lake City, but was a wonderful teammate, and did a great job when he did get the opportunity to play,” Pendergraft said.

The Hawks have converted Robinson back to his natural position as a shooting guard and the former Titan said the team is using him mainly as a defensive player. “Defense is the only reason I’m here,” Robinson said.

I think the writing is on the wall for Mario and Richardson. I will be shocked if either one or both make the team.

I've never heard of this guy, but to be very honest, I'm not surprised that West and Richardson are not signed. Both of them need to do a lot work on their games, and I still don't know if that'd be enough for them to play in the NBA. Natural talent is one of these things you either got or you better hope there's another life so that you can be fortune enough to have some. Now, can anyone tell me if S. Jones is one of these 14 guys we have under contract ?If he is, then I'm disappointed, cause I'd rather see West or Richardson than him, even though at the end, those 3 players are NOT NBA caliber. You might like their energy, willingness, or whatever, but when it comes to having what it takes to contribute in this league, none of them fit the bill.

How does inviting another guy to camp mean that the "writing is on the wall." Everyone goes into training camp with more guys than they need, and I'd be shocked if this guy even comes close to making the squad.

I wouldn't say Rio and J-Rich are locks. But I still think at least one of them makes the roster.

Here are the locks to make the team: Bibby, JJ, Smith, Claxton, Marvin, Horford, Zaza, Mo, Acie, Flip, and Morris. Then Solo is also likely to make it but obviously he could be moved or cut. So basically three (maybe four) slots are open.

Competing for those spots are Hunter, Gardner, Rio, J-Rich, Baligaric, Robinson and I'd guess a couple more. J-Rich has to be a major favorite to get one of those final spots as he was on the team last year, fills a need in that he's a shooter, and looked very good in SL. Then I think Hunter should make it as well, you can never have too many big men. That leaves one last spot up for grabs, I'd expect Rio and Gardner to battle it out for it.

Clearly, there are going to be some great battles in preseason regarding who makes the roster. But I think it's a little far-fetched to count out Rio and J-Rich already, if anything they are the favorites going into camp since they were on the team last year and know what to expect.

Id really like to see West back on the team. It is looking kinda doubtful though.
