NBA class of '05 extensions could be scarce

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Oct 7, 2008 1:47 pm

Already re-signed are star point guards Chris Paul and Deron Williams, who received similar three-year extensions (with options for a fourth year) which will be worth about $70 million if the options are exercised. The '05 No. 1 pick, Andrew Bogut, also agreed to an extension, getting $72 million over five years from the Bucks. The only other extension to be done so far is the five-year, $30 million deal the Kings gave guard Francisco Garcia.

SN has confirmed that three top 10 picks from the '05 draft will not be getting extensions, and will become restricted free agents next summer.

With new general manager Rick Sund still trying to get a feel for his team in Atlanta, a source says that No. 2 overall pick Marvin Williams is not a candidate for an extension.
Bobcats point guard Raymond Felton, with new coach Larry Brown still looking to size up Felton's role, is in a similar situation. Felton told SN earlier in the summer that he was hopeful that a deal could get done, but a source close to the negotiations said, "It's not gonna happen." No. 7 pick Charlie Villanueva, who will be starting at power forward for the Bucks, will be without an extension, too. "There has been no discussion of that from either side," a source said.

How can they already decide that is true? Sund will evaluate Marvin this season before deciding what to do.

What does Marvin need to do to get signed next year? We have JJ/Smoove/Horford/Acie/Mo/Flip for at least two years. Bibby/Marvin/Zaza/Jones are all expiring. Do we keep any of them? If they go, what do we look for in a FA?

Next year or before this season's trade deadline should be really busy for the Hawks.

He isn't likely to ink prior to the start of the season because of the difference between what he has proven on the court and what a #2 pick expects in terms of contract. He doesn't have a incentive to sign low for long term and the team doesn't have an incentive to throw money at him. If he doesn't have a breakout season Marvin will be a candidate for the qualifying offer because it is substantially more than the MLE. If he does have a breakout season then the Hawks have the RFA rights to match whatever offer he gets.

Yeah- that QO looms so large in these negotiations. He just doesn't have the incentive to sign a "reasonable" deal since he can just take that QO and then hit UFA the year after. Same situation as Ben Gordon was in this year. Actually Darko may be a more illustrative case. The Magic held Darko's rights but because he counted as a max contract against the cap (as will Marvin) they renounced him when they wanted to use that caproom. Marvin's Caphold is a big issue to me. And remember that Childress still counts as 10.8 million against the cap as long as he stays in Europe unless the Hawks renounce his rights.
