Is Law going to force us to re-sign Bibby?

Post#1 » by Hawks » Wed Nov 12, 2008 5:29 am

I just don't get it. He just isn't developing or showing any signs that he can be the PG of the future. He should be giving us some signs of hope. He just continue to regress. Quite frankly he is looking like a complete bust. If he was 20 or 21 I could see giving him time. The kid had 4 years of college and one NBA season under his belt. Law should be showing us something. Rose is light years ahead of Law right now.

I think so. Law has been given a chance to settle into his role but has given us nothing. He's the one real disappointment this year. At this point we're going to HAVE to re-sign Bibby and I wouldn't be surprised if Sund looked for a backup pg given that it appears we've passed the stage of developing players(which is a good thing).

Normally I would say Law needs time to get settled into the team, but in the time that he's out there he is just so unbelievably bad that I don't want him to get anymore playing time because he is killing us. First play he gets in, he gives up an and 1. It seems like everytime he is in the other team makes a run. I didn't look at stats but I'm guessing his +/- had to be like -30 for the game.

Too bad we waited so long to get a starting point guard in Bibby we could have had Hawes at C paired up with Horford starting or even Stuckey instead of wasting a draft pick on another combo guard that we are trying to convert into a point guard. :banghead:

Dare I say, Salim redux?

Last year Acie was driving all the time but this year he hasn't done it hardly at all. He looks pretty much lost right now.

Law's +/- for last night's game was -17. It's -11 for the year...it seems like more. I hate to even see him come onto the floor.

Bibby has been playing pretty good for us so far but I wouldn't want us to have to retain his huge salary. Like the original post said, Law's poor play and lack of development may force us to keep Bibby. I don't see too many other starting caliber point guards that would be available. Maybe we could go after Felton, he's a RFA after this season. Charlotte may not be willing to resign him since they got Augustin.

I thought Acie Law was going to blossom into a star this year? What happened to all of those people? There were serious posts here after the C's series saying he had the same value as Rondo!

Other than maybe Cwell i don't remember anyone saying Acie would be a star. But he looked a lot better last year than he has looked so far this year. He still looks like he is playing scared and that isn't the type of mentality you want in a pg.

The cult of Acie will soon find this thread and reign down scorn and ridicule upon you all!

First of all you are never allowed to talk about +/- when it comes to basketball. Its a worthless stat that cannot be used under any circumstances

Second of all its only 6 games in which means that you can't possibly take any judgments about any players.

Third of all he is only playing 11 minutes a game- how can you possibly expect his to produce anything when he is barely seeing the court and could get pulled at any minute if he doesn't play well!?

And fourth I am sure that you are still seeing lingering effects from some injury he is just too brave to whine about.

Plus minus in small sample sizes is pretty worthless. Right now Mo's +/- per game is -24. You think that is a credible number?

The problem is what Acie is actually doing on the court which you can only see from watching the games.

I think his problem was pretty clear in the preseason. He was DAMN good when he started and pretty tenative when he came off the bench.

He still hasn't adjusted to being a backup point guard, and he might never become one. I personally think the team would be better starting him right now, but Bibbys streak shooting is on, so you have to love him. looking at the team where Acie was the starting guard, offensively and defensively it looked tougher to stop. Coming off the bench, he looks to be trying to adjust to the flow the team already has instead of forcing his own...which is basically what backup points do. He just isn't built like that. The guy has been a starter his whole life and he doesn't know how to play limited minutes.

i actually think his improvement was hurt this offseason as he was the starter on the Summer league team then the starter for a good number of preseason games then back to the back up role to start the season. When Bibby went down, they still shouldn't have started him to get him accustomed to his role. While people don't want to believe it, starting and being the backup in the NBA is two completely different things that take some time to get used to. A guy like Speedy was great at being a change of pace backup point, but I am not so sure about him as a starter. A guy like Law, at this point in his career needs to start. But unless the injury bug hits, its not going to happy. I am pretty sure Murray has taken Acies backup minutes.

I would be interested in seeing if Law would have the free pass to fire at will like Murray has though.

On the bright side- the Hawks may be at the point where they are ready to win now and would rather trade a struggling young PG to a rebuilding team and take a veteran in return. Though I don't think Acie has much trade value at this point they still might be able to get something useful.

Bibby, if he stays in ATL, will not get that salary anyway. So with his pay cut (and a possibility of a retirement regarding Speedy), we will be in a better financial PG situation next year.

Now, Felton is also the kind of PG who should push ATL to keep Bibby, and not let him go. Why ? Because he's not a good enough shooter, and we all know that with Joe's game, we lost a weapon if our PG can't shot.

Whether you are starting or backing up you need to do something with the ball when you get it. If you drive and kick out to a sub who misses a shot that is one thing. But that hasn't been the problem so far this year.

If Acie keeps playing like this i wouldn't be surprised to see the Hawks use their draft pick on a pg if they can't find a center. It certainly woudn't make much sense to draft a 2,3 or 4.

Oh i agree. He should be adjusting by now. But my point is that when he was a starter, the team plays at his pace, which is clearly different from Bibby's. When he comes off the bench he tries to play at that Bibby pace which is just horrible for him and makes him basically useless.

Its him thats making himself useless. But I still say, the preseason should be for getting guys accustomed to their roles. Starting Acie for all those games didn't help his development at all. they should have started Murray at the point and brought Acie off the bench, as Murray is a experienced backup. But thats just hindsight.

Well....I really want Acie to succeed so we can do something with Bibby's expiring contract. But....he sucks. He was one of my favorite players in college and I was thrilled when we drafted him. But, he's a huge liability on the floor. His apologists will come out and make excuses for him (just like the Shelden Williams apologists used to do), but he just can't play right now. Maybe he'll develop in the future, but he hasn't shown any signs of it so far. He has no passing instincts, he's a terrible shooter, and he's an average defender. Bibby might have to get re-signed after all (I'm not a Felton fan).

I'd still agree with Hollinger here:

Law's lack of athleticism hurts him at the pro level. When he's not scoring, there's little else he does on the court.

CWell where are you?

To be fair to Acie, I thought he played quite well against Toronto. But other than that, he looks lost. He has no confidence whatsoever and that is no one's fault but his own. Hopefully he can turn it around and become the reliable backup PG that we need him to be.

Athletically i think his only real problem is a lack of hops. He has good quickness.

But his shooting form was my big question mark before his rookie season and it looms even larger now.

I think Mike Bibby is going to force us to re-sign Mike Bibby. He has been lights out of late, we are 6-0 with him as the starting PG, and there really aren't that many options out there that we can afford, or are reliable. If this team can show that they are a contender this year, then Bibby should be kept. Many people hated on him last year, but he been so big for us this year. He still acts like a SG playing PG, but just look at the unreliable PGs we had before him. T Lue, Anthony Johnson, Royal Ivy, etc. If Bibby keeps up this good play, then we should resign him, but yes, Acie has been a bit disappointing so far, but I think he has shown improvement. He is starting to go for his shots more, as opposed to last year when he would pass almost everytime that he touched the ball.

I see on the wiretap that Denver is shopping Chucky Atkins. He would be an upgrade over Law.
