Mike Bibby:

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:48 pm

It’s time to talk trade rumors. Ray brought to my attention a bit mentioned in a Yahoo! Sports story involving conversations the Hawks supposedly had with Portland about moving Mike Bibby for players that were not identified.

Apparently the story suggested that the Hawks were hot and heavy in talks and then decided to relax after their hot start.

The conversation (and keep in mind that GMs around the league are constantly discussing the possibilities, so I have no reason to be skeptical about the idea that some sort of conversation took place) had to have included the Hawks getting back not only another point guard, but also another young big that could have helped with their depth.

It makes you wonder what else might be out there in NBA Tradeland (a dangerous place to live when your team is above .500 and has the look of a legitimate playoff contender in spite of a significant injury in the first couple weeks of the season).

Bibby said before Saturday’s game that news of a potential deal never made it to his ears. “What the hell is Yahoo Sports?” he said before breaking into his comedy routine about the media. “That’s news to me Sekou. I never heard anything like that … you and the rest of the damn media always making stuff up.”

The way they’re playing right now, the Hawks would have to think long and hard about moving Bibby or anyone else, unless it was a totally one-sided deal that added an All-Star caliber talent (and for the record, Bibby is shooting the lights out of the Verizon Center right now).

 @ Bibby. Apparently he made some comments about Bosh that had the Raps fans all flustered, talking about he wasn't much worried about Bosh. I don't have the exact quote but the Raps fans were all over it.

We all remember what he said in the playoffs. He probably needs to tone it down a bit with the media.

I like Bibby's antics with the media. I think it keeps things loose in the locker room and takes pressure off of the rest of the guys.

That reminded me of the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back: "What the **** is the internet?"

I like how Bibby deals with the media and the rumors. It's always nice that he could not care less about Garnett, Bosh, and all the hype around guys like them in the league. Rivalry, that's what makes sports interesting. Anyway, I said that before and will say that again. If the Hawks are playing 0.500 basketaball or better, there's no way Bibby will be traded. I do not see any reasons why we should get rid of him either. He's a starting PG in this league, likely to get a much smaller contract next year, so you don't trade him unless it's something out of this world. Take Bibby out of this Hawks team and we would be lucky to be to have half of the wins we got with JJ struggling.

The same rumor mill said that the talk died as soon as the Hawks started on a win streak. Supposedly the thought of trading Bibby was tied to stumbling out of the block. If the team wasn't going anywhere this season then Bibby's expiring deal and veteran presence would have been used to improve the roster long term. There are plenty of people who've advocated the same thing on here. The difference is winning and being competitive each night which is more valuable to the still young roster than dealing Bibby before his contract is up. Skyhawk's right as long as the team is .500 or better, he isn't going anywhere.
