Dikembe Mutombo

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Dec 15, 2008 1:18 am

Once Dikembe Mutombo passes out his gifts, he hopes to return to the NBA for a final season, possibly with the Celtics.

The 7-foot-2-inch, 260-pound center said last week he hopes to sign with a team after spending Christmas with his family in Atlanta. The four-time Defensive Player of the Year said among the teams that have shown interest are Boston, San Antonio, and Miami. The former Rocket also said Houston has "not answered me." The 42-year-old, who has blocked 3,278 shots during his 17-year career, said he is in "good shape" from working out three hours a day with spinning classes, yoga, and weightlifting.

"You'll see me in the next two weeks," Mutombo said. "I will be somewhere. I really need to go back to playing. I've just got to make sure that I go to a place where I can be happy. There are about four to five teams that I've been looking at and about seven teams that have shown interest. It's up to me to make my decision."

I wouldn't mind Mutombo in Atlanta. Just as long as the fans realize that his minutes will be limited, so when one of our bigs has a bad game, no one should be screaming for Mutombo to get more minutes.

And the chances of him coming to ATL are pretty much low. If anywhere, it would make sense for him to go somewhere else where he has a higher chance of winning a championship.

If you continue reading the link, it seems like he's picking Boston.

Mutombo would be great for this team, because he would provide another well-respected shotblocker and rebounder...He would make our 2nd unit a lot more competitive, by giving them a DEF inside, allowing them to play more aggressive on the perimeter and not worry about getting beat...Combine his presence with Zaza's hustle would be a nasty duo inside on on the boards...

It makes sense from both a skill-set standpoint and a marketing stand-point. I dont see a reason why we DONT go after him. Worst-case scenario, he serves as a good marketing tool and provides some mentorship to guys like Smoove, Horf and Solo.

Wonder if Sekou has heard anything.

Dike back in Atlanta would be awesome! He could really teach some of our younger players to be professionals, on and off the court.

Dikembe Mutombo needs to be considered as a big man coach when he does retire. I expect him to sign with a true contender right now as a player, but we need to do what we can to bring him back to the Hawks family, because he would be such a positive player for our bigs to learn from.

Does Mutombo have any ties to Atlanta other than playing there years ago? (A serious question).
