Hawks' ASG Wkd: The Razzie Award Goes To...

Post#1 » by lethalweapon3 » Mon Feb 16, 2009 11:09 pm

In the category of "Worst Performance by an Atlanta Hawk at the 2009 All-Star Game"

Joe Johnson, as The Invisible Man, in the "All-Star Game"... "In a worlllld where players are not triple-teamed, one man finds a way to totally disappear."

Joe Johnson, for getting sent to the glue factory by a rookie and a soph, in "H.O.R.S.E." Just two hours after burying a half-court shot in practice, Joe comes up short with a Rick Barry free throw.

Mike Bibby, for blowing hometown hype and still nearly backing into the 2nd Round, in "Three-Point Contest"

Al Horford, as "I look like a Rookie," in "Sophomores vs. Rookies"

Dominique Wilkins, as "I can't believe I'm getting crossed up by Nancy Lieberman," in "Old-Timers Game"

The envelope, please...

Joe Johnson in the all-star game. I think it's time for Josh Smith to be in that. He is the type of player for a game like this, with fast-pace dunks and stuff. Guys like Joe Johnson, Tony Parker, Yao, maybe a Deron Williams (though wasn't in the all-star game) are guys that play the game of basketball in either their skill level like a Yao or an offense that is set up in plays like a PG (Parker, Williams, Harris). Joe Johnson is weird, because he looks like a Wade/LeBron type scorer, but he doesn't act like it in any all-star game so far, it's weird. It also seems like playing with "big time" players in a game like this scares him and he doesn't seem like he wants to shoot or even play. In team U.S.A. he didn't act like this, nor in the playoffs last year. I don't know what's up.

Can you see Josh Smith lighting it up with dunks in the all-star game. Now that is what should happen next year.

I still blame the HORSE format and the lack of trash talking for it being a flop. Joe actually started showing some personality.

Al isn't the type of player or guy to excel in an all-star format. He's not me first enough.

Bibby almost made the 1st round cut.

Nique phoned in the effort, but that's the norm not the exception for retired guys.

Joe clams up in the actual all-star games like he's unsure he belongs. Scared is a good description. The 5 TOs and the O fer get that razzie. He deserves to be in the game by how he plays during the season, but he is definitely not making the most of the opportunity for exposure.

There were a few problems with the horse. I thought the first mistake was having so little space, I wanted to see guys taking shots from their own free throw line, sitting on the bench, etc. But you can only do so much on that little court they had.

Also, pick some guys with some freaking personality. Joe and those guys not exactly men
of many words.

As for Bibby, he's more of an in-game scorer. He would have won easily if he was given extra time and got to run the PNR on every shot with the defender going under the screen. But obviously that isn't what the contest is about.

Joe's style of play doesn't work in the ASG. His game doesn't have the same flare or flash of most of those guys, and he also isn't an especially athletic guy, so he's not going to be making any highlight-reel plays either.

Sorry, but I don't buy the "Joe didn't do well in the ASG because he's not that type of player" argument. That may be why he isn't as fun to watch in the game as a flashier player, but Tony Parker isn't a flashy player and he did whatever he wanted out there. Joe's first ASG he dropped 12 points on 9 shots. Tim Duncan is always criticized for being "boring" (I could watch the guy play all day, but whatever) and he has an ASG MVP. Ray Allen isn't flashy and is less athletic than Joe and he dropped 28 last season.

Joe had a bad game because he couldn't hit a shot, make a pass, etc.

Whatever, its a bad game that is less important than the other bad games he's had recently. The important thing is for him to come out with guns blazing like he did for the closing stretch of last season.

Mike did well except he choked down the stretch, uncharacterstic. He was a basket away from being in and he missed, what, 9 out of his last 10?

This "razzie award" goes to lethalweapon3 for forgetting its the stinking ALLSTAR game. Just making it to the events is a fantastic honor.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Yes, Joe sucked. But even if he did well he wouldn't have stood out at all. He basically has to fade into the background in these games, so him not playing well wasn't a surprise to me.

"You Like Me... You REALLY Like Me!" lol

Apologies to Ms. Field...

And with apologies to Messrs. Childress and Smith, I'm just Joshin' them a little. Woulda been nice to get one good superlative performance from the Hawks players coming outta ASG wkd, but as parson notes, it's just great not to be shut out (as in past years)!

They can make up for it all during the playoffs. Apologies to Mr. Mora.

As much as I like JJ, I was very disappointed. You got to be selfish and jack shots at the ASG, that's what every player does. You play 20+ min, you got to score. You feel sick or something, then don't even play. But JJ lacks the killer instinct that most of the other All-stars have. He lacks that will to be the best and take over a game. That's why I think he'll be a perenial All-star for many years, cause he's got talent and game, but he'll never challenge to be the game's MVP or something that really matters. The number of countries broadcasting the NBA All-star game is higher than the number of countries that are part of the UN, no wonder Kobe, James, and Shaq and others always show up to play.
GO HAWKS.
