Sund and the trade deadline

Good luck catching Hawks general manager Rick Sund without a cell phone stuck to the side of his face this week.
It was that way in Phoenix during the NBA’s All-Star weekend when Sund tried to enjoy himself in between constant calls. It has been that way in Los Angeles the past three days, where he joined the team for a five-game Western Conference road trip.

Unlike many of his colleagues, Sund isn’t presiding over a franchise desperate to shed big contracts in anticipation of crossing over the league’s luxury tax threshold.

And the Hawks have a first-round pick and several expiring contracts they could use as bait for a team that needs to dump salary, and potentially a quality player.
But with the Hawks at 31-22 and currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings, the need for a future-altering makeover is not there.

I was a little bit surprised they talk about the fact that ATL has expiring contracts to work, and that there's a possibility they use it.
I would like to trade for a big (even if I have no problem with keeping the same players for this season, and not making any possible risky move), but I thought it would not be a possibility from the owners view. Sund didn't say they are OK with a move, but I would think that if they told him they don't want any non-expiring contract, Sund would not have talk about that at all.
Now, Sund didn't say he is trying to make a deal, and both Joe and Woodson seems to prefer keeping the same players.

Over the past couple months David Lee and Udonis Haslem have been linked to us. Dominqiue Wilkins has even praised David Lee numerous times during his broadcast. I doubt we are willing to give what it would take to acquire David and I doubt Miami's looking to move Udonis Haslem after acquiring Jermaine O'Neal.

I would be shocked if Sund made any moves at the deadline let alone a big one for many reasons.
#1 The largest expiring contract is Bibby, who is playing well and any potential trade would risk returning us to the pre-Bibby days.
#2 Josh Smith is BYC.
#3 Marvin and Zaza's deals aren't large enough to return a star or even veteran upgrade.
#4 Because of the nature of the market forces resigning Bibby and Marvin at reasonable salaries is actually a strong possibility.
There is actually one trade that I think would work, but it's a big risk.

A small trade for a vet big man (e.g., Hunter -for- B. Skinner).
Anything else would be a shocker, for sure.

I supposed the expiring contract was more Zaza, Murray and Claxton since is paid by insurance.
And in a case like SAC, wanting cap relief more than anything, I am sure we have a chance.
They are rumors about SAC having a deal build on Miller+Salmons for Gooden, or for Anderson, Swift, Hassel and Najera.
Getting both Miller and Salmons would be hard, unless Marvin is included. I am pretty sure Marvin+Zaza+Speedy can bring them. But would it be worth the risk ?
EDIT: they are both (Miller and Salmons) traded to CHI for Gooden and Niocioni.

I'm a little disappointed for Sacramento. They weren't able to include any of their really bad contracts in the deal (Udrih) and Nocioni is on the books for 4 more years.
Maybe they'd be interested in Speedy's virtually expiring (due to insurance) for Mikki Moore, since Moore wants out and is long.

Sac got worked over by Chicago. Sac(like Charlotte)likes backup/medicore players signed to long term deals for some reason. They have signed Udrith,Garcia,and Mikki Moore to long term deals within the last 2 years. Why didn't ask for Hinrich instead of Nocioni if they were going to take on a long term deal?

Certainly because CHI has a deal to send Hinrich, but could not get one for Niocioni other than this one.

It's sad, but my biggest concern coming up on trade deadline is that Vince Carter gets shipped to a Western Conference team. The Nets have been that much of a pain to us.
