Seems that if a player retires while under contract he has to appeal for reinstatement an can be blocked by any team. According to the article the Hawks are one of the teams that voted against him. I assume that's because he was rumored to be quickly bought out and anticipated signing with Miami. I'm not sure how much White Chocolate had left, but I applaud the strategic maneuver to block.
