Rudy Gay?
Grizzlies Get:
Marvin Williams (SNT), Hawks' 2009 1st Round Draft Pick
Hawks Get:
Rudy Gay
Rudy Gay's yet to reach his peak and he's only tapped into the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential. IMO, this would be a good deal except Johnson & Gay's contract would end at the same year.
And then the next question I'd ask you is how much do you guys think Rudy Gay will get paid after his contract runs out? I was thinking maybe a 5 yr/40 million contract.
I don't see Rudy fitting in Grizzlies more than Marvin would. Seeing that OJ obviously has taken that franchise away from Rudy, we can see how good he can play a step down from the 'face of the franchise' level and play next to JJ who would make him look like an all-star if he hadn't done so already in Memphis. A lineup of Bibby, Johnson, Gay, Smith, Horford is not a bad lineup IMO.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I perfectly content with Marvin Williams and keep the first round pick.
Grizzlies aiming for deal with Gay
"But this is where I want to be. Playing for a coach that's as passionate as (Lionel Hollins) is and playing for someone who makes you work hard, makes me want to pick up my game. I think I have since (the coaching change), so I'm comfortable that this is where I should be."
Agent Jeff Austin, who recently took the place of Lance Young in representing Gay and Paul, said Thursday that his client is motivated to remain in Memphis.
"He likes it there," Austin said. "It's all good. It's not like there's any negatives. We'll sit down after the season and talk about it."

I like Marvin better than Gay. and they are basically the same age.
Marvin would be dropping 18 a night if he wasnt like the 4th option. Dont believe me? just look at how much he scored when Joe was out and actually allowed to do his thing.

Re: Rudy Gay?
the Griz would not do it, and i would rather keep the pick and Marvin (espeically since this year's draft is full of quality PGs)
i want to keep Marvin, but i would be interested in exploring the possibility in trading Marvin for a low lottery, or mid first round pick and signing Shawn Marion, if the price is not too high.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I would love to have Rudy but I don't think the Grizzlies would do it.
IIRC around the trade deadline there were reports that Memphis didn't do the trade for Amare because they thought the Suns were wanting too much by asking for Rudy Gay. If they aren't willing to let go of Gay for a guy like Amare, no way they would trade him for Marvin. I like Marvin's game but I think Gay possibly has superstar potential.

Re: Rudy Gay?
No. I don't want to bash Rudy Gay, but he doesn't improve the team nor is he a complete player (not much on D). If we don't think Marvin is worth investing in or the back injury threatens to be chronic then I'd be more interested in going after Ron Artest. While a psycho, he brings a toughness and defense that could boost them team over the top.
As for the Shawn Marion suggestion, how many teams have to say that he's a locker room cancer and how much must his production wane to get him off the radar? His best days were as the undersized, but super athletic 4 for a running team. You play him out of that position and his advantages start dwindling (think Josh Smith as a full time 3) and we don't need him at the 4.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I'd do the trade but Gay's numbers are alot less impressive than I thought they would be before I just checked. The leap from year 2 to year 3 is supposed to be pretty significant but he's actually gotten worse. He hasn't scored that efficiently and he's still a bad passer which is surprising because his biggest weakness coming out of college(like Iggy)was supposedly that he was TOO unselfish.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I always thought his biggest weakness was supposed to be lack of intensity drawing comparisons to Tim Thomas. He seemed to disprove that his first 2 years, but the fear lingers.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I like R. Gay better than Marvin. His numbers are down a little bit this year first because at the beginning of the season, he went at it with Ivaroni and with the addition of Mayo, his role on that team is a little bit cloudy. The drive and will to be a star is what makes him special to me and that's why I'd take him over Marvin. What about we include Smith for M. Gasol and maybe Milicic.

I think you are confusing Rudy Gay with OJ Mayo. Rudy doesn't play any defense and there were all kind of concerns about his work ethic when he was drafted. His college coach also benched him numerous time for coasting in games. I also don't like the fact that he's regressed this year at 22. The jump from year two to year three is supposed to be huge. I don't remember many top young players drafted in the past 5-6 years who played worse in their 3rd years.

uhh, so because Rudy is on a bad team and is able to shoot the ball more. That means he has a bigger drive to be a star?
you guys spend so much time raggin on smith for stupid TO and selfish shots. And then you go and try to trade the most unselfish guy on the team for a guy who makes stupid plays and takes alot of selfish shots.
i dont see any logic in this.

Re: Rudy Gay?
Marvin was in bad teams here for a long time man, and he could've taken 15 shots a game, but guess what?!? he didn't. He was satisfied in being the 3rd, 4th, and even 5th option for the Hawks and he still is. I do not think it'll ever change. I remember ESPN interviewing Marvin the day we drafted him, and they asked if he could avg 20-10. I mean, this will never happen even though that was the expectation on him, not because he doesn't have the talent. He just doesn't have IT. I'm not saying that Marvin is a bad player, my point is, he's ok with not being great or at least above avg. I think Gay has more upside and more importantly, he's got the attitude. He wants the ball, he wants to make a difference. That's why I'd take him over Marvin.

Re: Rudy Gay?
I agree with HG and Evil. Not only is Gay overrated, he's a bad fit here ad wouldn't make us much better. He's a selfish player that takes too many shots, and continually settles for jumpers rather than using his athleticism. He's also a mess on defense and would be a massive downgrade over Marvin.
I thought he might have been headed for stardom early in his career, but he hasn't improved at all and isn't a smart player. I remember coming out of college the knock on him was that he wasn't a very hard worker and lacked focus on the floor, maybe that is the case.
