David Andersen Update

In the awkwardly unnecessary 3rd/4th place game previous to the final, Barcelona managed to easily knock off a very jaded Olympiacos squad, in large part due to another terrific outing by Australian big man David Andersen, with 20 points in 26 minutes, on 8-12 shooting (3/5 3P). Although this wasn't the most competitive setting you'll find, Andersen still did a nice job showcasing his excellent skill-level, primarily in the form of his jump-shot, knocking down an array of spot-up, pull-up, turnaround and pick and pop jumpers, in the post, from 18-20 feet, and all the way out beyond the 3-point line.

After the game, we managed to catch up with Andersen in the VIP area, which gave us an opportunity to pick his brain on where he stands in terms of the NBA.

Andersen didn’t hesitate to indicate his interest in playing for the Atlanta Hawks, or any other team that might be interested in his services. He did seem a bit frustrated by the predicament he’s in, thought, with his NBA rights essentially being held hostage by the Atlanta Hawks.

“I just wish they would give me a straight answer either way. Every year it’s the same thing. If they want me, great, but if not, I would like to go play somewhere else. I can’t force the tender and go play on a non-guaranteed minimum contract, but I don’t think I’m asking for crazy money either.”

Andersen has another year on his deal with Barcelona, but has a clear NBA escape clause in his contract that that he can exercise until July 15th. That is a difficult situation for Barcelona, as they will be in serious limbo until that point—essentially the very tail end of the signing period for elite European clubs, where there will likely be few if any big men of Andersen’s caliber on the market. Barcelona has an option to buy out Andersen’s contract, and may be forced to do so if they feel like they cannot wait on the NBA to act.

What’s most unfortunate for Andersen is that he had already received assurances from former Hawks GM Billy Knight that they would bring him over to the NBA last summer, but that plan went to naught once he was fired and replaced by Rick Sund, who said he needed another year to evaluate him. The Hawks have apparently had multiple teams try to acquire Andersen in a trade, but have been reluctant to deal him for fear that he may make them look foolish in another team’s uniform. Based on the way Andersen has looked here in Berlin, that’s a legitimate possibility.

I'm not sure about the financial realities of possibly bringing him over, but if several teams are interested in his rights it seems like it is time to make a decision. Don't worry about him succeeding elsewhere, don't piss away an asset.

David doesn't seem to want to come here an prove himself first, he wants to be paid, and he's a risk for any team to just offer him a long term contract at the amount he's wanting. He's already rejected numerous offers from us during the past. The amounts I read during the past that he's seeking is roughly 4-7 million per season. No thanks!

At the most, we should offer him a similar contract to the one Marc Gasol signed, which was 3 years 10 million. I'd be happy just to move him for a second round pick because I don't expect him to ever put on a Hawks uniform.

If it meant getting a player we wanted I wouldn't be opposed to trading our 1st and his rights to move up a few spots and get that player (I'm assuming the player wouldn't last until our spot). He's getting up there in years and soon will have no value whatsoever.

Seems some of you guts have been conditioned by the ASG's mediocrity. Seems BK really wanted to improve the team. Fire Woodson, bring Andersen over. I totally disagree with Sund's decisions.

My question to Sund is; did you know anything about the Hawks before acepting to run the team?

Did the team need to wait a year for you to get with the program?

Wouldn't it have been better to give BK his contract and allow him to make his moves? Firing Woodson and bringing Andersen in seem like better moves than Sund made.

I have an issue with an euro thinking he can just stroll over into the NBA demand 4 mill plus and most likely a starting job without ever proving he can succeed in the league. If he truly wants to prove he can make it in the league he can come in on 1year 450k deal if he succeeds he's entitled to a major pay increase.

That's ridiculous. Has has already enjoyed a fine career in top Euro play. The Hawks should have offered him a reasonable, market value contract.

I totally agree. He has already proved himself in the pros in possibly the 2nd best pro league in the world for a few years now. There is a slight risk, just like there's a slight risk with any NCAA grads. I would be willing to offer him up to $5 mils per, but I think he could be brought over for $4 mils.

I mean, Marc Gasol signed for less than $4 mils, and had much more less pro experience. This guy has been a solid pro for a few years, and has better offensive abilities and offensive potential then Gasol. Don't know much about his defense, though.

I think he should be brought to ATL. Assuming we resign Zaza, we don't have any other big worthy of being in an NBA rotation.

The Hawks don't want him on a reasonable, market value contract- if he were a free agent the Hawks wouldn't pay market value. Sund loves to use the leverage he as with RFA's and in this situation he has even more leverage with Andersen. I think that a trade is certainly the best situation because I don't think that Sund would ever pay what it took to get Andersen over.

Not to oversimplify, but I would offer the guy no more than $4 mil a year (as cap space allows), and if he doesn't want it, I trade him to get something in return for a player who will never play for me at the price I've set.

To me, Andersen has proven to be all about the money. Try to get paid, by all means, but at some point it has to be about wanting to play at the highest level. It's the same reason I gave up on Josh Childress : if you don't want to play in the NBA, why should we care about you?

With that thought, I wonder what we could get in a trade by offering Childress and Andersen in SNT's.
See, if we keep either, we'd probably lose Evans (for Childress) and Zaza (for Andersen).

I'd rather trade 'em for a PG. We could SNT Childress, Andersen AND Bibby .....

I really could care less about DA anymore. I will admit I have only seen him play a couple of euroleague games and the olympics, but I was not at all impressed with him. We need a physical presence to take the heat off of our undersized front court, not a big man that spends so much time on the perimeter.

How much is S. Jones and R. Morris salaries combined ? Since we don't play either player, I'd get rid of both of them, add some more money, and then get Andersen here. I think he'd be great for us. He's a big with decent rebounding abilities and a nice jump shot from what I've read. He'd stretch the floor a lot specially when JJ gets doubled. None of our big guys can do it consistently, so for the right price, I'd give him a shot. I'm just afraid we'll do what the Spurs did to Scola, I mean, that trade will hurt them for years to come.

I like that, got any trade partners in mind that we could send all 3 to?

david andersen was better than marc gasol in europe so he should mor than a 3yr/10mil deal. andersen isn't a young player and he isn't going to take a severe pay cut just to put on a hawks uniform. a deal along the lines of what zaza got wouldn't be too bad. but andersen would be one of the better backup centers in the NBA and he would be a clear upgrade over the solo/morris tandem. if we can't resign zaza (which isn't a gurantee at this point) andersen wouldn't be a bad backup option. it would be even better if we could get both of them.

Yeah, to POR for Oden or LA for Bynum (sorry, I couldn't help myself).

Actually, I was throwing that out, hoping someone else would have an idea. Give me some time and I'll come up with a brain-blisteringly good idea. Or several. I guess bad ideas are a dime-a-dozen.

But all 3 are tradeable assets, aren't they?

Andersen is 29 yrs, he is not even starting this year on Barcelona, he is coming behind Ilyasova. He is a jumpshooter PF with little defense. He is averaging 6 ppg, 2.5 rpg and does not fit with the Hawks. Marc Gasol was the MVP of last league on ACB and he was a dominant 24 yrs old Center averaging 16,6 ppg, 9rpg, 1.7 bpg, you just cannot compare the two players.

i also see that he put up over 22ppg in the euroleague finals and he was also shooting at over 50% from the field and 40% from the three point line during the euroleague season. either way that's better than what our backups did this year. and it's also better than what you are gonna get from free agency. we don't need a starter we need depth. this guy is depth.

Well you're definetly not goin to pay a back up the kind of money he wants. Part of the reason he wants a big contract is that management would not allow a highly paid new aquisition to sit on the bench it would definetly affect his starting or overall playing time.

we're paying zaza 4 mil a year. and he is gonna want a raise. you are going to have to pay either way. and other teams are trying to get at him for a reason. we aren't going to beat the top teams in the league by running a team on the cheap. it's not the johnson's and smith's of this team that going to hold us back, it the solomon jones's and speedy claxton's that going to hold this team back.

this team needs upgrades. andersen is one way to do it.
