DREAM Trade?

With Dwight Howard seeming grow more and more away from what ORL is trying to do, the obvious fix would be to get rid of the coach, Van Gundy. But, strange things have happened with Superstars in recent years. Is too much of a pipe dream for ATL to land the hometown star?

Our best offer (that doesn't cripple us) would probably be:

Hawks send:
Horford ($4.3M) + Marvin ($7.3M) + future 1 rounder

Hawks get:
Dwight Howard ($15M)

But surely ORL would not trade him to us (being that we're division foes) but, again, stranger things have happened. However, with Bosh/Amare floating around trade rumor mills here and there, could we get Dwight in a 3-way while keeping Joe and Smoove? Let's say...

Hawks get: Dwight ($15M)
= who could be our team's savior and make us title contenders in the East

Phoenix gets: Horford ($4.3M) + Marvin ($7.3M)
= 2 starters who fit their style and allow Shaq/Nash to run team for one more year + Cap relief/options in 2010 and beyond

Orlando gets: Amare ($15M) + Hawks' future 1st + Suns' future 1st
= Premiere big that plays inside and on the perimeter that fits their style and build around Amare/Lewis/Nelson

IS this more pipe dream or possibility?

I'd give up Smoove, Marv and Horford to get Dwight on this team.

I applaud your attempt at the home-run trade, but we need a reason why Orlando would want to trade Dwight or why Dwight would want to be traded in order to consider this trade. (I don't think his recent spat with the coach is enough, but you could build on that.)

I remember the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar trade years ago. MIL got a truckload of talent - on paper, more than he was "worth" - but LAL won the trade because they got a HOF center. The NBA is all about superstars, and if you get one, you hold on.

ORL would be crazy to trade Howard, even if we offered Joe, Smoove, Horford and Marvelous. On paper, their talent is great, but we could trade them and still field a team pretty easily to work with Howard. We could line up Acie, Flip Murray, Mo Evans and Solomon Jones beside Howard and that'd be a pretty decent team. That's not even considering the players we could add. Think of the free agents. They'd line up to play with Dwight Howard.

But your original premise is correct in that Sund's due dilligence would always involve asking about players like Howard ("Hello, Portland? Tired of Oden yet? Can we interest you in a trade for him?").

Like the subject said, "Dream Trade". No reality to it.

There was a thread about Wade for Joe or something like that a few weeks ago. Why do people start threads proposing these obviously lopsided trades as if they expect the feedback to be that it's fair value to the other team?
