Woodson's contract not extended

. . . yet.

I personally don't think this tells us whether or not he will be re-signed. Sund took the position of sitting back and evaluating the players for a year before making any moves (or standing pat). I think he could just be taking another year to evaluate the coach as well before making a contract decision.

The most logical outcome is that he completes his contract next year and we don't resign him. This works for several reasons:

- our broke fractured ownership doesn't have to pay two head coaching salaries this year
- it's the smart pr move - the old "he took us as far as he could, we need someone to push us to the next level" ploy
- if we somehow advance further in the playoffs next year, they can resign him for a relatively cheap salary extension

Hmmm, if someone hadn't floated an article (a coach or agent) about this would anyone had even thought about it? I mean he's under contract for next year and the franchise has shown that it doesn't deal with contracts until it must. Furthermore, with the economic concerns that are now prevalent the days of making sure your have your coach locked up long term could be done. No team wants to pay 2 coaches at the same time. Also let's be honest, the Hawks would have to make the NBA finals and maybe win them next year to get other teams to try to hire Woodson away.

No reason to extend him. We need to see if this team has the potential to become a true contender under him and we haven't seen that yet. We did take a big step under him this year, but if we can take the next stepI just hope that the players don't tune him out next year knowing full well he could be gone the following season anyway.

Props to Woody for handling this with class and embracing the challenge. I can't say enough about how well he has handled all the crap he's had to deal with publicly. He could have easily imploded and probably taken the team down with him on several occasions.

Yeah, I'm not sure if its news that a coach who was just signed for a 2 year deal wasn't extended in the middle. You do the 2 year thing because you want to see how things work out short-term.
