Atlanta Trading Marvin Williams, Acie Law?

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Tue Jun 2, 2009 4:55 am

As of now, Atlanta has only $40.8 million in committed salary next season, but it remains to be seen whether the fiscally challenged ownership will do what it takes to bring back Bibby, Williams, and Pachulia, or bring in some notable free agents.

There have been rumors of Williams being dangled in a sign-and-trade for cash. Don't be surprised if talented yet unused guard Acie Law, the 11th overall pick in the 2007 draft, is moved, too.

Don't be surprised to see the Hawks dangle any number of players to other teams in much the same fashion the Denver Nuggets did with Marcus Camby last summer in an effort to help cut salary and acquire young talent and/or draft picks.

This story came up before and I still wonder how a player can be signed and traded for cash? It doesn't make sense given my understanding of the rules. I don't think they have any particular insight into the Hawks although financial concerns are always a reality we have to worry about.

Its a rumor started in Boston by a guy who has absolutely no clue about the CBA. The only times you could S&T a player for Cash are if the team has enough caproom to do so. (Denver has a Trade exception large enough but they aren't a realistic option) So why would a team do a S&T for Cash when they could just sign Marvin outright. Its not like 3 million dollars in cash is going to be the difference between the hawks matching or not. If the Hawks agreed to do the S&T for just 3 million it would be clear that they had no intention of actually matching.

As far as Acie- I still think that if he isn't dealt then he will have his 4th year team option declined. I think its virtually a lock he gets traded to a lottery team who might want to take a flyer on the guy for low cost.
