Most Likely Offseason Plan

Since most of us think we are going to be the biggest movers out there it's good to think about what at the opposite end of the spectrum, notably what is more than likely going to happen this offseason.

Draft- some backups
we aren't going to find any starters out here. we are prob gonna find the replacements to solomon jones and speedy claxton, in other words end of the bench material in woody's hierarchy. so lets say we get middle of the road and pick up jeff teague and alani aminu they are still gonna be buried on the bench.

Free agency
expect people to get resigned. only person that may bounce is zaza pachulia since another team can reasonably overpay for him. if he leaves look for andersen to come over since sund wouldn't have to bid against anyone else to get him. if zaza stays, then andersen stays in europe for another year. mario west may be let go and we might get a new recruitment of practice players.

trades
ha. maybe speedy in a salary dump but that's it.

buyout
speedy claxton more than likely

final roster

pg- Bibby/Law/Teague
sg-Johnson/Murray
sf-Williams/Evans
pf-Smith/Aminu
c-Horford/Pachulia/ Morris

IR-Hunter,Gardener

keep in mind that the team still has alot of chemistry to get to. we can still put more out there with another offseason of training. hell maybe even woodson gets a high-powered offensive coordinator. but i really don't see anything massive happening this offseason. really i'd be cool with this roster you'd have two PG's in waiting for when bibby does decides to hang them up. you have gardener in to learn some more to maybe replace Murray and Aminu could turn out to be the steal that gets one of these guys moved. i wouldn't call this a bad team.

I don't know. I get the feeling that Sund will make a splash - it may just be a minor one though. I think Sund wants to put "his" stamp on the team and not win simply with BK's guys. Sund didn't have a lot of time to analyze the team last year since he took it over after the season. Now that he's seen and been around the club for a year, he'll be ready to make his move. If it's trading Smith or Marvin or signing a FA, I don't know, but I do think he'll do something...

Why would we buyout Speedy if we can't trade him? He is an expiring contract, so by buying him out we lose a piece of trade bait that could be useful to a team wanting an expiring contract.

i think both sides are going to look for a trade, but unless sund wants to add 3-4 million real money (insurance doesn't pay for a healthy person) he'll probably just eat the money and free up a roster spot. either way i don't see speedy being on this team when the preseason starts.

nobody wants to spend 14 million plus on josh smith. i doubt we'll get an offer so good they'll want to do this. remember, this isn't a salary dump like gasol, they are gonna want equal value. who in the NBA makes close to 8-10 million, has a couple years on his contract, and is good enough to be traded for j.smith for? i cant think of anybody.

marvin may be able to leave, but i don't see a team out there willing to give him a contract we can't match.

Maybe the most likely, but also the one that doesn't take huge risk, and help return to the second round.
It can even improve the team if the re-signed player don't heat all the room under the tax, and allow to add a good player with the MLE.
But we need to know the right numbers for estimate that.

I still would have prefer the plan I was calling in February, by trading Zaza and Speedy mainly for a big at 10M like Brad Miller, avoiding the Zaza free agency (Marvin and Bibby give enough work this summer).
And with 47M instead of 42M of guaranteed salaries, if Bibby and Marvin were re-signed for a total of 17M, we would have had room under the tax to use the MLE on another guy, or Flip+another, maybe not fully used as we have to fill the roster with minimum contract.

And the CLE series would have had a chance to not be a sweep ;)

Why would Speedy want to take less than what he's due? Why would the insurance company give any $$$ to someone not on the roster? I don't see a buyout here. We have to keep Speedy unless we trade him...

MEM got 3 1sts (or what amounts to 3 1sts) for Gasol. Granted it wasn't necessarily fair value, but I don't think MEM saw it as a pure salary dump either. Anyway, deals generally don't work that way for a player like Smith. Generally, one team gives up the better player for expirings and prospects - maybe some veteran role player types if the expirings don't fit. The ? isn't is there a young player who makes X that team B would give up for Smith; the ? is there a team that could and would give up enough young talent to satisfy what we're asking for Smith. Even so, I'd agree that it isn't probable that we'd find a deal for Smith that would suit everyone involved either.
